You need entry permits for Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park and Langtang National Park, plus TIMS. Fees change, so confirm them when you book. Sundarijal is a short drive from Kathmandu.
Permits and fees
The route passes through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and Langtang National Park, so you need an entry permit for each park, and you normally also need a TIMS card. Fees change from time to time, so we confirm the current amounts when you enquire. Carry your passport and a few passport-size photographs.
Where permits are checked
The first check is at the Sundarijal gate, and the Langtang park post is at Kutumsang. Officials record your details and ask to see the permits.
Getting to the start
Sundarijal is reached by road in about an hour from central Kathmandu, either by private car or by local bus.
Getting back
Sermathang is on a dirt road that links to the Melamchi valley and the Kathmandu highway. A jeep takes four to five hours depending on the road.

A guide is not required but is helpful for first-time trekkers. Lodges along the route are simple, with shared bathrooms and wood-fired kitchens.
Money, signal and charging
Carry cash in rupees. Mobile signal is available in many villages, and charging is provided for a small fee.
Insurance and communication
Make sure your travel insurance covers trekking up to 4,000 m. Mobile coverage is good in many villages, so you can call or message home each evening.

Kathmandu has outdoor shops in Thamel where you can buy or rent gear, including down jackets and sleeping bags. Rental prices are modest.
