Himlung Himal: height, location and route

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Himlung Himal is a 7,126 m peak in the Manang district near the Tibetan border, reached through the Nar Phu valley. It is often chosen as a first 7,000 m climb because the route is less technical than other peaks of its height.

A 7,000 m peak with a gentle reputation

Himlung Himal rises to 7,126 m near the Tibetan border in the Manang district, north of the Annapurna range. It is one of the more approachable 7,000 m peaks in Nepal, because the route is mainly snow and glacier rather than steep rock, and the approach through the remote Nar Phu valley is long and gradual. It has become popular with climbers who want a first 7,000 m summit.

Setting

The peak is close to the border and rises above the Nar Phu valley, a hidden region of stone villages, barley fields and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The valley was closed to outsiders for many years. Now it is open with restricted-area permits. The landscape is dry and wild, with high pastures and canyons.

Who first climbed it

A Japanese expedition made the first ascent in 1992, and the peak was later opened to commercial teams. Since then it has seen regular ascents each season.

Why climb it

The mountain offers a good test of high-altitude skills in a quiet setting. The summit gives views across to Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Gyalzen Peak and the Tibetan plateau.

Who it suits

Climbers with experience on trekking peaks like Island Peak or Mera Peak and a good level of fitness. A strong guide team is needed.

Views from the summit

On a clear day the summit looks across the Annapurna range and the Manaslu massif to the south and over the Tibetan plateau to the north. The flat, brown land of Tibet contrasts with the white peaks. The sunrise light on Annapurna II is memorable.

Why people choose it

Himlung is a step up from trekking peaks without being as demanding as an 8,000 m mountain. It offers a quiet, scenic approach, a chance to practise expedition skills and a respectable summit altitude.
