Himlung Himal permits and logistics

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Himlung Himal needs a climbing permit through a registered agency, a special permit for the Nar Phu restricted area and the Annapurna Conservation Area fee. Fees change, so confirm them when you book.

Permit layers

A climbing permit is required for Himlung Himal. The Nar Phu valley is a restricted area, so a special permit is needed, together with the Annapurna Conservation Area permit. These must be arranged through a registered agency. Fees change, so confirm with your operator.

Gear and crew

Teams need camping equipment, food, fuel, porters, Sherpa guides, a cook crew and medical supplies. Oxygen for emergencies is carried by some teams.

Transport

The road to Besisahar and Koto is rough and takes a day. Jeeps are used.

Communication

Mobile signal is available in some lower villages but not on the mountain. Teams may carry satellite phones.

Insurance

Your policy must cover high-altitude climbing and helicopter evacuation.

Why the permits are layered

Himlung Himal needs several permits because the route crosses protected and restricted land. You need an expedition permit for the peak, the Annapurna Conservation Area permit, and a restricted-area permit for the Nar Phu valley. The restricted area permit is charged per week and requires that you travel with a registered agency and a guide. All of this is arranged by your operator, but you must provide passport copies and visa details early.

Getting around and staying in touch

The first leg is by road from Kathmandu to Besisahar and onward by jeep to Koto, which takes most of a day. From there the trail is on foot. Mobile signal is available in some lower villages like Chame and Koto, but not in Nar Phu or at base camp. Expeditions carry satellite phones for weather forecasts and emergency calls, and some provide Wi-Fi at base camp for a fee.
