Best time for the Ice Lake hike: seasons, snow and wind

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Ice Lake is high enough that the season matters more than for most day hikes. Conditions at 4,600 m differ sharply from the village.

Autumn: September to November

The clearest and most popular season. October and November give crisp air and sharp views of Annapurna III and Gangapurna. Nights are cold, and late November can bring early snow.

Spring: March to May

Snow may still cover the upper trail in March and early April, and parts of the lake can be frozen. By late April and May the path is clearer, but haze and afternoon cloud increase.

Monsoon: June to August

The Manang valley is drier than southern Nepal, but cloud often hides the peaks and the lower approach is wet. The hike is possible but less rewarding.

Winter: December to February

Deep snow, temperatures far below freezing and few open lodges. The hike is for experienced winter walkers with local support.

Time of day

Start early in every season. Mornings are clearest and calmest; afternoon wind and cloud are the norm.

Choosing a date

  • Clearest views: mid-October to mid-November.
  • Fewer people: late April to May.
  • Avoid: heavy snow weeks and the middle of the monsoon.

Temperatures at the lake

Even on a sunny October day, expect temperatures near or below freezing at the lake early in the morning, with a stiff wind that makes it feel colder. In winter, temperatures can fall to around minus 15 degrees Celsius or lower. A warm hat, insulated gloves, a windproof shell and a down jacket in your daypack are not optional.

Snow and trail conditions

After a snowfall the path can disappear under drifts, and the steep sections become slower and more slippery. In spring, melting snow can leave patches of ice on shaded slopes. Microspikes are useful in these conditions and can be hired in Manang in some seasons. If the trail is deeply snow-covered, ask your guide whether it is safe to proceed or better to wait a day.

Crowds and logistics

October is the busiest month, and the trail can feel like a procession in the early morning. Leaving at first light helps. In shoulder months you may have the lake nearly to yourself, though the tea house is more likely to be closed, so carry everything you need.
