Fitting Ice Lake into an Annapurna Circuit plan

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Ice Lake works best as part of a balanced Manang stay rather than as a box to tick. Here is how to place it.

Option 1: the rest-day hike

Stay two nights in Manang. On the middle day, hike to Ice Lake if you feel well, return to Manang to sleep, and rest the next morning before moving on. This is the most common plan.

Option 2: Braga or Bhraka overnight

Sleep in Bhraka or Braga the night before, hike to the lake early, descend to Manang for the next night. This shortens the climb and avoids the walk from Manang, but needs a flexible schedule.

If you are also doing Tilicho

Tilicho Lake is a harder objective. Do not stack a hard Ice Lake day immediately before it. Many guides advise choosing one, or doing Ice Lake early in your Manang stay and Tilicho after several days of rest and adaptation. See the Tilicho itinerary.

If you are tired or unwell

Skip it. The Circuit has plenty of harder days ahead, including Thorong La. A rest day that leaves you refreshed is worth more than a view you struggled for.

Budget and packages

Ice Lake adds no cost beyond a day of time. Our Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake 16-day package and 18-day Circuit both pass through Manang, so you can ask us to plan the rest day around Ice Lake.

A sample three-night Manang block

  1. Night 1 in Manang: arrive, rest, drink, attend the afternoon altitude talk at the health post.
  2. Day 2: Ice Lake if you feel strong, or an easier walk if not. Return to Manang to sleep.
  3. Day 3: a rest morning, laundry and shopping, then an easy walk or onward to Yak Kharka.

What to do if the weather is poor

If cloud and wind close in, do not force the hike. Use the day for the Braga monastery visit or a short walk to Gangapurna Lake instead. Weather windows in the Manang valley can reopen within a day. Building a flexible rest day into your plan is more valuable than any single viewpoint.

Ice Lake and the later stages

Remember that the biggest days of the Circuit lie ahead: the walk to Thorong Phedi or High Camp and the pass itself. Arrive at those days with energy in reserve. A trekker who has spent every rest day on a major climb may be more tired than one who rested sensibly. See our Thorong La guides for what comes next.

Common questions

Can I do Ice Lake and Tilicho on the same trek?

Yes, with enough rest between them. Many trekkers choose one.

Where should I stay for Ice Lake?

Manang is the usual base. Bhraka or Braga shortens the climb.

Is Ice Lake required for acclimatisation?

No. Easier walks work just as well.
