The best view of Jannu from a trail is on the north Kanchenjunga trek, near Khambachen and Ghunsa, where its west face rises above the valley. Kabru is better seen from the Indian side, from Darjeeling and the Singalila Ridge.
Jannu from Khambachen
On the north route, the village of Khambachen sits in the valley below Jannu, and the west face is in clear view. It is a huge, steep wall. The trek continues up the valley to Lhonak and Pangpema.
Ghunsa and the lower valley
Ghunsa, a Tibetan-style village at about 3,595 m, is a good place to rest on the way. Mountain views open up as you go higher, and Jannu appears for the first time above the trail.
Kabru from the Indian side
Kabru is visible from Darjeeling, from Sandakphu on the Singalila Ridge and from several places in Sikkim. From the Nepal side it is far to the south and is seen mostly as a distant skyline.
How to plan it
The north Kanchenjunga trek takes about three weeks (our itinerary is 20 days) and needs special permits. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. See the north base camp itinerary.
If you have less time
There is no short way to reach these views on foot. Mountain flights over eastern Nepal are another option, and they show the range from above.
