The Kalinchowk trek is short. From Kathmandu you travel by road through Dolalghat and Charikot to Kuri village, then walk for one to two hours to the temple or ride the cable car that opened in 2018. Most operators sell it as a 2 or 3 day trip.
Route in brief
Kathmandu to Dolalghat to Charikot to Kuri by road. From Kuri the hike to the temple takes about one to two hours. Until 2018 the walk was the only route; a cable car now takes visitors up.
Sample itinerary
- Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Kuri (a full day by road in winter conditions)
- Day 2: Walk or ride the cable car to the Kalinchowk temple, see the sunrise and return to Kuri
- Day 3: Drive back to Kathmandu
Getting there
Public buses run to Charikot with onward jeeps to Kuri. A private vehicle is easier, and a four-wheel-drive is advised in heavy snow. Prices change, so ask for a quote.
Lodging
Hotels and lodges are in Kuri, with more near the temple. Book ahead in winter and during festivals.
Fitness
This is a gentle trek with a short ascent, but the temple is above 3,800 m, so go slowly and dress warmly.
