Khopra Ridge lodges, permits and best season

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Khopra Ridge has fewer facilities than the main Annapurna trails. Knowing this in advance makes the trip easier.

Lodges

Lodges on the ridge are simple, often community-run, and some have limited food choices. Rooms are usually unheated, power is solar, and mobile signal is patchy. Carry cash, snacks and a warm sleeping bag.

Permits

You need the Annapurna Conservation Area permit and a TIMS card. Check whether any extra local fees apply when you book. See the permits guide.

Season

March to May and October to November have the clearest views. Winter brings snow and cold, and lodges at the top may close. The monsoon brings leeches and cloud. See best time for Annapurna treks.

Weather and difficulty

The ridge is windy and cold at night. The trail is rougher and less crowded than Poon Hill. Expect long climbs, loose sections and few places for lunch. See how hard Poon Hill is as a baseline.

Packing

Pack as for a high teahouse trek. See the Poon Hill packing list, and add an extra warm layer.

What to expect for food

Lodge menus on the ridge are short: rice, noodles, soup, eggs and tea. Fresh vegetables are limited. Carry snacks and electrolyte sachets.

Water and power

  • Treat or filter all water.
  • Carry a power bank; sockets may be limited.
  • Expect cold rooms and use a warm sleeping bag.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for Khopra Ridge?

You need the ACAP permit and TIMS. Ask about any extra local fee.

Are lodges open in winter?

Some close. Confirm before travel.

Is there mobile signal?

Patchy at best.

How the lodges differ from the main trails

Lodges on Khopra are fewer and simpler than on Poon Hill. Some are community-run and offer basic rooms and set meals. Expect shared toilets and limited hot water.

Seasonal trade-offs

Spring brings flowers and warmer days, autumn brings clear air. Winter can leave snow on the ridge, and the monsoon makes trails slippery and views unreliable.

Local community lodges

Khopra uses community-run lodges, so plan to bring cash and check availability. Permits for the Annapurna Conservation Area are required.
