Poon Hill makes a perfect base for a longer trip. Many trekkers start with the classic route and then extend it when they discover they want more time in the mountains. The Annapurna region is full of trail connections, so you have several choices.
The Ghandruk loop
The most common extension crosses from Ghorepani to Tadapani and then descends to Ghandruk before returning to Nayapul. This adds a day or two and passes through quiet forest, big views and one of the prettiest Gurung villages in the region. It turns a there-and-back walk into a satisfying loop.
Joining Annapurna Base Camp
From Tadapani you can continue to Chhomrong and follow the Modi Khola valley to Annapurna Base Camp. This combines Poon Hill with the full sanctuary trek and adds about five to seven days. The route builds altitude gradually, which can be good for acclimatisation, and it provides the best of both worlds.
Adding Mardi Himal
After Poon Hill you can move to the Mardi Himal ridge, either by returning to Pokhara and starting again from Kande, or by linking routes on foot with extra days. The ridge offers a quieter experience and close views of Machhapuchhre.
Other options
- Visit the Gurung museum and hot springs near Jhinu Danda.
- Add a day in Pokhara for boating, paragliding or a lakeside rest.
- Take a short drive to a viewpoint such as Sarangkot for sunrise.
Planning an extension
Extra days mean extra costs and a higher need for fitness, so decide before you travel whether you want to extend. If you are unsure, start with the classic route and keep a flexible schedule. A good operator can adapt plans on the trail if you feel strong and weather permits.
A word on time
Check your visa, return flights and work leave before committing. Always keep a spare day for delays and be realistic about how much walking you will enjoy.
Costs and logistics of extending
Adding days adds hotel, lodge and guide costs, and may require changes to flights. Ask your operator for a revised quote before you commit. Group departures are less flexible than private treks, so extension is easier when you arrange it in advance.
Fitness for the longer route
Extending Poon Hill into ABC means two to three more days at higher altitude. Add a few more weeks of training, focusing on long hikes. Consider a medical check if you have never been above 3,500 metres. Longer treks also demand good foot care and stable weather judgement.
Sample 10-day plan
- Days 1 to 3: Nayapul, Ulleri and Ghorepani with the Poon Hill sunrise.
- Days 4 to 5: Tadapani and Chhomrong.
- Days 6 to 7: Dovan, Deurali and MBC.
- Day 8: ABC and back to MBC or Bamboo.
- Days 9 to 10: Jhinu Danda, Nayapul and Pokhara.
