3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Khayer Lake is a high mountain lake above the Khopra Ridge. It is regarded as sacred by local communities. It is a demanding side trip from Khopra, with a steep climb to an altitude well above the ridge.

  • Height: about 4,600 m, depending on the source.
  • Start: Khopra Danda, at about 3,660 m.
  • Climb: about 900 to 1,000 m above the ridge.

What you see

A wide, cold lake in a barren bowl, with views back toward Dhaulagiri and across the Annapurna range. The scale and silence are the reward more than the colour.

Cultural importance

Local communities regard the lake as holy and visit it for rituals on special days. Be respectful: do not swim, do not litter and keep noise down. Ask your guide about customs. Dates for local festivals vary.

Is it for everyone?

No. It is a long day above 4,000 m on a rough path. It suits fit trekkers who have already spent a night or two at Khopra.
