Khayer Lake altitude, safety and best season

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The lake is higher than anywhere else on a Khopra Ridge trek. It is also far from help, so safety margins matter.

Altitude

You climb about 900 to 1,000 m in a morning and return the same day. It is reasonable only after at least one night at Khopra and with no symptoms. If you have a headache or poor sleep, skip it.

Remoteness

There is no clinic or helicopter pad near the lake. A guide with a radio or phone, a charged power bank and a clear plan for descent are essential. See altitude on Annapurna treks.

Weather and snow

Fresh snow hides the path and makes the climb slippery. In autumn and spring mornings are the most stable. Afternoon cloud and wind are common.

Warning signs

Worsening headache, nausea, confusion or breathlessness at rest mean go down at once.

Best season

Mid-March to May and mid-October to November. Winter is cold and snowy. The monsoon is wet and cloudy.

Questions to ask yourself before going

  1. Did I sleep reasonably at Khopra?
  2. Is my appetite normal?
  3. Do I have a headache?
  4. Is the forecast clear for the next six hours?

If you answer no to any of the first three, stay at Khopra and enjoy the ridge.

If someone turns back

A group member who feels unwell should descend with a guide or porter. The rest can continue if safe. Never leave a symptomatic trekker alone.

Common questions

Is Khayer Lake risky?

It is a remote high-altitude day trip; take it seriously.

When is the best time?

Spring and autumn.

Can I camp there?

Possibly, with a guide. Confirm conditions and rules before you go.

Know your own limits

Take the altitude seriously even though the trek is not huge by Himalayan standards. Sleep high only when you have acclimatised, and tell your guide about any headache.

Plan a retreat route

Before you commit to the final stage, agree a turnaround time. Turning back is part of good mountain judgement, not a failure.

Remote but reachable

The lake lies above Khopra Ridge at around 4,600 m. Rescue is slow in this region, so move cautiously and confirm weather daily.
