Langtang trek for Indian travellers: permits and cash

3 min read

Langtang is a convenient trek for Indian travellers, because it is close to Kathmandu and does not require a flight. The paperwork is simple when it is handled by an agency.

Fees at SAARC rates

  • Langtang National Park entry: NPR 1,500 per entry, per the figures supplied to us.
  • TIMS: NPR 1,000, issued through an agency.

That is about NPR 2,500 in official fees on the standard route. If your itinerary includes the Gosaikunda area, an extra weekly fee may apply. Children below ten are exempt from entry fees. Rates can change, so confirm them before booking.

Guide

A licensed guide is required on Langtang routes, and the agency registers you and the route.

Identity

Carry the passport or voter ID that you used to enter Nepal, plus photocopies and passport photos. Check the latest entry requirements before you travel.

Money

Carry Nepali rupees in small notes. Do not count on ATMs along the trail, and note that Indian currency may not be accepted in remote villages.

Food

Vegetarian food, especially dal bhat, is available everywhere on the route. Tell your guide and lodge about dietary needs.

Travel and health

  • Take insurance that covers trekking at altitude.
  • Carry your regular medicines.
  • Share your itinerary with family.

Send us your details to begin the paperwork.

Easy access from India

Because no flight within Nepal is needed, the trek is straightforward to plan. You can fly or travel overland to Kathmandu, spend a night and start the road journey the following day. The shorter schedule means fewer days away from work, which suits many Indian travellers.

Carrying the right papers

Bring your passport or other accepted identity document, photographs and copies of your permits and insurance. Carry a few extra passport photos in case an extra form is needed. Check with your operator which fees apply and how they are paid.

Food, money and health

Vegetarian food is easy to find, and a dal bhat meal gives good energy. Carry Nepali rupees in small notes, since there are no machines on the route. Pack a basic first-aid kit and personal medicines, and consult your doctor if you have a health condition.

Quick reminders

  • Tell your bank and family about your travel plans.
  • Keep copies of documents in separate bags.
  • Check that your insurance covers altitude and evacuation.

Practical travel from India

Many Indian trekkers reach Kathmandu by air or by road via the border crossings, then take a bus or jeep to Syabrubesi. Allow an extra day for travel and rest. Carry identity documents, cash in small notes and printed copies of bookings.

Health and comfort

Bring any regular medicines with prescriptions, travel insurance with evacuation cover and a warm sleeping bag. Vegetarian food is easy to find, and lodges are used to special diets if you explain in advance.
