Langtang: quick answers for planning

3 min read

How long is the Langtang Valley trek?

Most itineraries take about seven to ten days, including the drives.

Do I need a guide?

Yes. A licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card are required on Langtang routes.

What is the national park fee?

The figures supplied to us are NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals, per entry. Confirm before booking.

What is the TIMS fee?

NPR 2,000 for most nationalities and NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals, issued through an agency.

When should I go?

Autumn and spring are best, though the trek works in other seasons with care.

Is a flight needed?

No. The start is by road from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi.

Can I add Gosaikunda?

Yes, with several extra days. A weekly fee may apply in the Gosaikunda area, so confirm with us.

What is the Tamang Heritage Trail?

A cultural trek with villages and hot springs, which can be combined with Langtang.

Is it good for first-timers?

Yes. It is moderate, with manageable altitude if you follow a standard schedule.

How far ahead should I book?

A few weeks is usually enough outside October, when you should book earlier.

What is a good length for a first Langtang trek?

Seven to nine days from Kathmandu suits most people, including the road journey. This gives time to walk up slowly, spend a day around Kyanjin Gompa and return with a spare day. Shorter plans are possible but leave less margin for weather and rest.

Can families with teenagers do Langtang?

Many do. Choose a pace that suits the youngest and add an extra day if possible. Make sure everyone understands the signs of altitude illness and carry enough snacks and warm layers. Ask your operator about experience with families.

How do I get to Kathmandu from the airport?

Your operator will arrange a pick-up, or you can take a pre-paid taxi. Confirm the arrangement in advance. Traffic can be heavy, so allow extra time.

Is there accommodation at Syabrubesi?

Yes. There are small hotels and lodges, and most operators have a favourite. In busy months, book ahead.

What about the effects of the 2015 earthquake?

The valley was badly affected, and many villages have been rebuilt. Visiting supports the local economy. Be respectful when talking about the events and consider donating to community projects through trusted channels.

What is the best itinerary length for Langtang?

Seven to ten days is ideal for the Langtang Valley with Kyanjin Ri. Add days for Gosaikunda or the Tamang Heritage Trail. A buffer day is wise for weather or road delays.

Is Langtang safe after the 2015 earthquake?

Yes. The trail and lodges have been rebuilt, and trekking has resumed. Conditions can change with landslides and weather, so your guide will advise on current status.

Can I trek Langtang in winter?

It is possible with warm clothing and flexibility, but nights are very cold and some lodges close. Snow can affect higher sections. Spring and autumn are better.

Do I need a tent?

No. Lodges are available at each stop. A tent is only needed for special expeditions off the main trail.

What should I do if the road to Syabrubesi is blocked?

Your operator will usually arrange an alternative route or delay departure. Allow spare days at the start and end of the trip.
