Lo Manthang can be reached on foot, by jeep or by a combination. The choice shapes the days you need and the experience you get.
Classic trek
Typical stages go from Jomsom to Kagbeni, then Chele, Syanbochen or Ghami, Charang and Lo Manthang, with a rest day in Lo Manthang. The trek usually takes 8 to 10 days return, depending on pace and route. See Upper Mustang itinerary days.
Jeep options
A road now runs most of the way. Jeeps can save days, but the road is dusty and rough, and driving reduces acclimatisation. See jeep or on foot.
A sensible mix
Many travellers walk the more scenic sections, particularly the trails above the road, and drive the dusty, less interesting stretches. Talk to your operator about which parts are best on foot.
Altitude
Lo Manthang is at about 3,800 m. Plan a night at Kagbeni and a gradual rise, with a rest day in the city.
Permits
A restricted-area permit is needed, and the route requires a registered agency and licensed guide. See Upper Mustang permit fee guide.

Choosing your mode
Walking gives you the landscape, villages and slow pace; jeeps save time. A mix is common: walk the dramatic high trails and drive the long, dusty road sections. Altitude matters as much as time: the slower you go, the better you adapt.
Transport comfort
Jeep journeys are bumpy and dusty. Wear layers, carry a buff and sit towards the front if you tend to feel motion sickness. Ask about the vehicle and driver before you book.
