Lo Manthang day trips: Choser, Namgyal and the cave monasteries

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

A rest day in Lo Manthang is usually spent on a side trip. Several sites lie within a half or full day.

Options

  • Namgyal Monastery, on a ridge near the town.
  • Garphu (Ghar Gompa), a monastery above the plains north of town.
  • The Choser cave complex, with ancient man-made caves.
  • Thinggar village and its plains toward the Tibetan border.

Which are open, and which need special permission, depends on the season and the border area. Ask your guide to confirm.

By foot, horse or jeep

Some sites can be reached by walking; others are far enough to need a jeep or horse. Plan accordingly.

Respect

Ask permission before entering, dress modestly and do not touch religious objects or paintings.

Timing

Start early. Wind rises in the afternoon, and light is best in the morning.

Planning a side-trip day

A full day gives time for one or two sites. Start early, carry lunch and water, and agree with your guide on a return time. In winter and spring, check road and trail conditions. If you are interested in cave systems or border plains, ask whether special permissions are needed.

Photography and etiquette

Many interiors forbid photography, or require a fee. Ask your guide and respect the rules. Do not use flash on paintings, and do not touch murals or statues.

A word on conservation

Many of these sites are fragile and need careful stewardship. Entrance fees and donations help fund conservation work. Support local custodians by paying fees and following guidance.

How to choose between sites

  • Short on time or energy: stay inside the walls and visit the three main temples slowly.
  • Interested in art and history: ask for a guide who can explain the murals.
  • Interested in landscape: head north toward the plains for open views and wildlife.
  • Interested in caves: confirm access before committing, because conditions vary.
