Lower Mustang is in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, so it is drier than most of Nepal. That makes it one of the few places to trek in the monsoon, though the wind is a constant.
Autumn (September to November)
Clear skies, stable weather and harvest season. October is the busiest month and the best for views. Apples are harvested and lodges are lively.
Spring (March to May)
Warm days, blossoming trees in the lower valley and good visibility. April and May are popular. Afternoon winds can be strong.
Monsoon (June to August)
Much lighter rain than elsewhere in Nepal, so Lower Mustang is often recommended for monsoon travel. But flights can be disrupted, roads can be affected by landslides on the lower approach, and cloud can hide views. Mornings are often clear.
Winter (December to February)
Cold, dry and quiet. Days can be sunny, but nights are very cold. Some lodges close. Muktinath may have snow. Winter is a good time for travellers who want solitude and are well prepared.
The wind
Wind is the signature of the valley. It usually starts around mid to late morning and builds through the afternoon, and it is strongest in spring. Walk in the morning, rest or sightsee in the afternoon, and carry a windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen and a buff.
Festivals
Local festivals follow the lunar calendar, and dates change each year. The Tiji festival of Upper Mustang is better known, but villages in the lower valley also hold celebrations. Ask your guide. See Tiji festival in Lo Manthang for the better-known example.
Choosing dates
- For clear views and harvest: October.
- For warm days and flowers: April.
- For quiet and monsoon travel: June to August, with flexibility.
How to plan a day around the wind
A reliable rhythm is to leave at first light, walk until late morning, and be in the next village by lunch. Use the afternoon for rest, local sightseeing or a short walk in a sheltered side lane. If you must walk in the afternoon, expect dust, grit in the eyes and a stiff headwind heading up the valley. A buff over the mouth and glasses with side shields make a big difference.
Flights and weather
The same wind that affects walkers affects flights. Planes into Jomsom operate in the morning and are often cancelled or delayed when cloud sits on the gorge. Plan one spare day before an international connection, and keep a road plan in mind in case flights are grounded.
Dressing for dry, windy cold
Even in warm months, the valley is dry and the sun is strong. Carry sunscreen, lip balm, a hat, a windproof shell and a warm layer for evenings. Moisturiser helps with cracked hands, and drinking more than usual keeps you comfortable in the dry air.
