Jomsom: flights, wind and how to get there

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Jomsom is the transport hub of the valley. A short flight from Pokhara makes it the easiest high-mountain destination in Nepal, but the weather and wind rule the schedule. Here is how to plan it.

Flying Pokhara to Jomsom

The flight takes about 20 minutes in a small propeller aircraft and gives a dramatic view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and the Kali Gandaki gorge. Flights run in the morning, because wind in the valley rises through the day and makes landing difficult later. Expect early check-in and a short wait at Pokhara airport.

Delays and cancellations

Cloud, wind and visibility can delay or cancel flights, especially in monsoon and winter, and sometimes in autumn. Build at least one spare day into your plan, and avoid booking a tight international connection immediately after a Jomsom flight. If you fly out from Jomsom, a cancellation can leave you waiting a day or more.

By road

A road connects Jomsom to Beni, Pokhara and onward. The journey is long, rough and slow: often a full day or more, with landslide risk in monsoon. Jeeps are the usual option. The road has changed how people travel the valley, and many now fly in and drive out or the reverse.

From the Circuit side

Trekkers arriving from Muktinath can take a jeep to Jomsom or walk down via Kagbeni. See Muktinath on the Annapurna route for options.

Wind

The Kali Gandaki valley acts as a funnel, and winds typically blow strongly from the south in the afternoon. For walkers, that means mornings are best for travel. The wind is persistent, dusty and cold at times, so carry a windproof layer and sun protection.

Altitude on arrival

Jomsom is at about 2,720 m. Flying from Pokhara at about 820 m gains nearly 1,900 m in minutes. Most people feel fine, but take it easy on the first day, hydrate and avoid alcohol, particularly if you plan to go higher.

Planning tips

  • Book flights early for peak months.
  • Keep your schedule flexible.
  • Carry essential medicines and a change of clothes in your hand baggage.
  • Confirm the flight the day before.

Your first day in Jomsom

After a morning flight, you have most of the day in front of you. A gentle walk to Kagbeni is possible, but many people prefer to rest, explore Jomsom and Thini and let the body adjust. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals and alcohol, and note any headache or breathlessness. If you plan to go to Muktinath, build in a night at Jomsom or Kagbeni first.

If your flight is cancelled

Do not wait at the airport all day. Check with your airline in the morning, and have a plan B: a jeep to Beni or Pokhara, a day in Marpha or an extra day of walking. Staying flexible costs less than missing an international flight. Ask your operator in advance what the fallback arrangements are and who pays for them.

Luggage on small planes

Domestic flights have strict weight limits, often around 15 kg checked baggage, with a lower limit on some small aircraft. Pack within the limit or ask your operator to send heavier bags by road. Keep valuables, medicines and a warm layer in your hand luggage.

Common questions

How long is the flight?

About 20 minutes from Pokhara.

Can I drive to Jomsom?

Yes, but the road is long and rough, and landslides can cause delays.
