Best time to visit Manang: seasons, cold and festivals

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Manang is high and in the rain shadow, so its seasons differ from the lower valley. The main windows are autumn and spring, but each has its own character.

Autumn (late September to November)

The most popular and reliable season. Skies are clear, trails are dry and the peaks stand out. Days are warm in sun and nights are cold. October is the busiest month. By late November, nights are very cold and lodges begin to close.

Spring (March to May)

Spring offers longer days and blooming rhododendrons on the lower trail. April and May are best. Early spring can bring snow, and by late May cloud and haze increase. Fewer trekkers than autumn, which suits many people.

Monsoon (June to early September)

Manang receives much less rain than the south, but the lower valley is wet and landslide-prone, and cloud hides views. Some lodges close. Trekking is possible but less comfortable.

Winter (December to February)

Cold and quiet. Many residents move to lower altitudes, lodges close, and passes may be blocked. Winter is not recommended for standard trekking.

Temperatures

Daytime temperatures in autumn can be pleasant in the sun, but nights fall below freezing in Manang and are much colder higher up. Wind chill is significant. Pack layers.

Local rhythm

Villagers farm in summer and move down in winter. Festivals follow the lunar calendar and vary by year. Ask your guide whether any celebration is on during your visit.

Choosing dates

  • For clear views: October.
  • For quieter trails: late April to May.
  • For flexibility: avoid fixed dates and allow spare days.

Day and night temperatures

A rough planning picture: in October, sunny afternoons in Manang can feel mild in a T-shirt, while nights fall to around freezing or below. In November the nights are noticeably colder, and by December many mornings start well below freezing. At Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi it is colder again, and the dining rooms are the only warm places. Wind adds to the chill in the afternoon.

Crowds and booking

October is the busiest month, and the best lodges in Manang can fill by mid-afternoon. Early April and late May are quieter. If you are travelling in peak weeks, a guide who phones ahead is worth having. If you arrive without a booking, you may end up in a less comfortable lodge or a dormitory.

Why the shoulder months can be better

Late September and early May do not offer the clearest skies, but they give you more space on the trail, more room in the lodges and more time with the people who run them. If you have a flexible schedule and can accept some cloud, they are good choices. Just keep an eye on conditions on the pass.

Common questions

October is the clearest and busiest. Late April to May is a good quieter alternative.

Does it rain in Manang?

Much less than on the south side of the range, but monsoon still brings cloud and landslides to the approach.

Is Manang open in winter?

Many lodges close and the villagers move down, so services are limited. It is not recommended for standard treks.
