Crossing Larkya La: what the Manaslu pass day is like

3 min read

The crossing of Larkya La is the central challenge of the Manaslu Circuit. It is a long day, but with good preparation and weather, it is rewarding.

The approach

The night before is spent at a high camp, often called Dharamsala, a collection of simple lodges below the pass. Sleep can be poor at this altitude, which is normal. Eat and drink what you can, and sort your gear so you can leave in the dark.

The day itself

You start very early, often before dawn, to cross while the weather is calm and the snow is firmer. The route climbs steadily over moraine and snow slopes to the pass, which is marked with prayer flags. From the top, you see a ring of peaks. The descent is long and steep, passing a glacier valley before reaching the lower meadows and Bimthang.

Conditions

Snow can be deep in spring and after storms. Wind and cold are common even in autumn. Your guide will judge whether it is safe to go, and the decision to wait or turn back should be respected.

What to carry

  • Warm layers, thick gloves, hat, buff and windproof shell.
  • Sunglasses or goggles for snow glare.
  • Traction devices if the guide advises them.
  • Water, snacks and a headlamp.

Altitude

Good acclimatisation at Samagaon and a slow pace on the way up are the best protection. Do not go on if symptoms are severe. Descend if you feel unwell.

Timing

Allow a spare day at the high camp. The guide may choose to wait for better weather, and a flexible schedule is much safer.

The long descent

After the climb, the descent from the pass is long and often steeper than expected, with loose stones, snow or ice in places. Use poles, take small steps and keep your focus. Fatigue can lead to slips, so stop for a short rest and some food as you lose height. The reward is the view of large glaciers and peaks as the valley opens below.

Staying together

Keep the group within sight of the guide and each other, and agree in advance on signals. In poor visibility or wind, staying together matters. If someone slows down, do not leave them behind, and ask the guide to adjust. The aim is for everyone to reach the other side safely.

Planning for contingencies

Discuss with your operator what will happen if the pass is closed or if conditions worsen on the day. A good plan includes an alternative day, extra food and fuel at the high camp, and clear decision points. Respect the guide's decision even if you feel strong, because mountain weather can change very quickly.

A last checklist

  • Warm layers, goggles or sunglasses and gloves in your daypack.
  • A thermos of hot drink and high-energy snacks.
  • A headlamp with fresh batteries for the early start.

A closer look at the day

The crossing starts around 3 to 4 am from Dharamsala at about 4,460 m. The trail climbs steadily across moraine and snow to the pass at about 5,106 m, then descends a long way to Bimthang at about 3,590 m. The total day can be eight to eleven hours. Wind and cold are the main challenges, and you must keep moving to stay warm.

If conditions are bad

Heavy snow, strong wind or poor visibility may mean waiting a day at Dharamsala or Samdo. Your guide will decide. Keep a spare day in your plan, and carry extra food and warm clothes in case of delays.
