Best time for the Mardi Himal trek

3 min read

The best times for the Mardi Himal trek are spring, from March to May, and autumn, from October to November. The ridge is exposed and views depend on clear weather, so the seasons with stable skies matter even more than on lower treks.

Spring: March to May

Spring brings rhododendron blossom to the forest between Deurali and Low Camp, creating a colourful trail. Days are warm in the lower sections and mornings are often clear at the top. Afternoon cloud becomes more frequent as May approaches. Nights at High Camp remain cold.

Autumn: October to November

Autumn has the clearest air and the most stable weather, with crisp mountain views. It is the busiest season, and lodges at High Camp can be crowded. By late November nights can be very cold, and the ridge may have snow.

Winter: December to February

Winter brings cold, clear days and few trekkers. Heavy snow can cover the upper trail and close it, and lodges may close. Only well-equipped trekkers with flexible plans should consider winter.

Monsoon: June to September

Rain, leeches and cloud make the monsoon a poor choice. Views are often hidden, trails are slippery and landslides are common. The trek is technically possible but rarely enjoyable.

Choosing a window

  • Pick March or April for flowers and warmer weather.
  • Pick October or early November for crisp views and fewer clouds.
  • Avoid long holiday weekends if you want quiet lodges.

Weather on the ridge

Morning is the best time for views. Afternoon cloud often rolls in from the valleys. Wind can be strong at High Camp and above. Carry a windproof layer, a warm hat and gloves in every season. Keep a spare day in your plan so that you can wait for a clear morning if needed.

What to expect month by month

March has the first rhododendron blooms and cold nights at the top. April is the best spring month, with flowers and clearer skies. May brings warmer days and more haze. October is the clearest and busiest month. November is crisp and quieter. December and January are cold with occasional snow. February is quiet but unpredictable. June to September is monsoon.

Crowd levels

Peak weeks fill High Camp, and trekkers sometimes share rooms. If you want a quiet experience, choose weekdays, shoulder months or late November. Being early on the trail ensures you get a room and a seat near the stove.

Making the best of cloud

Even in the best seasons cloud can obscure views. If it does, enjoy the forest, birds and the atmosphere in the lodge. Keep a flexible plan and an extra day so that you can wait for a clear morning.
