Permits and entry rules for the Mardi Himal trek

3 min read

The Mardi Himal trek lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you need an entry permit for the conservation area and a trekker registration of the type used in the region. Your trekking operator normally arranges both before you start. Rules and fees change over time, so check the current arrangement when you book.

Conservation area permit

This permit is issued by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project and is checked at entry points on or near the trail. Fees are set in Nepali rupees and differ for foreign nationals, SAARC nationals and Nepali citizens. Indian citizens pay the SAARC-category rate, which is lower than the general foreign rate.

Trekker registration

A registration record is also required, linked to your passport details and itinerary. The way it is issued has changed over the years and may now depend on local authorities. Your operator will know the current system and will normally handle the paperwork.

What to bring

  • Passport or accepted identity document, plus a photocopy.
  • Passport-size photographs if requested.
  • Travel insurance information and an emergency contact.

Guides

Rules on mandatory guides have been announced and revised. Even where a guide is not strictly required, the Mardi Himal trail is steeper and quieter than Poon Hill, and a guide helps with route finding in mist, lodge booking and emergencies. Ask your operator for the current rule when you book.

Respect the area

Carry out rubbish, avoid plastic where possible, do not cut vegetation and keep to the trail. Mardi Himal's forests are home to wildlife such as monkeys, pheasants and sometimes deer, so keep a respectful distance and never feed animals.

A practical note

Keep your permits in a waterproof pouch and store photos on your phone. If you lose them, tell your guide at once and inform the nearest checkpoint.

Practical arrangements

Your operator usually brings permits to the start, or you can arrange them in Pokhara. Allow time for this on your arrival day, and carry the necessary documents and photographs. If you are trekking independently, ask a local agency to help with registration, because the process can be confusing.

Checkpoints on the trail

You will usually pass a checkpoint near the start, where staff check your permit. Keep it accessible. Checkpoints help rescue teams and are staffed by friendly locals.

Fees and what they support

  • Trail maintenance and signage.
  • Waste management in villages.
  • Conservation projects and local communities.
  • Emergency communication support.
