Mardi Himal trek: health and safety answers

3 min read

Can I get altitude sickness on Mardi Himal?

Yes. The trek gains height quickly, so headaches and poor sleep are common, and a few trekkers develop serious symptoms. Walk slowly, drink water and descend if symptoms worsen.

How cold does it get at High Camp?

Nights can fall below freezing, especially in winter, and the ridge is windy. Bring warm layers, a good sleeping bag and a hat and gloves.

Are leeches a problem?

In the monsoon and just after, leeches live in the lower forest. Wear gaiters, use salt or repellent and check your legs and socks regularly. In dry seasons they are rare.

Is the water safe?

Use boiled, filtered or treated water. Lodges sell boiled water, which also reduces plastic use.

What if the weather turns bad?

Stay at your lodge and wait. Do not climb in poor visibility or on snow without guidance. A spare day in your itinerary is the best insurance.

Do I need insurance?

Yes. Choose a policy that covers trekking to at least 4,500 metres and includes helicopter evacuation. Carry the policy number and share it with your operator.

What if someone gets injured?

Lodges can help with first aid and communication. Rescue depends on weather and distance, so early reporting and a descent on foot with support are often the first steps.

Is the trail slippery?

It can be, especially in forest sections after rain. Boots with good grip and trekking poles help, and extra care is needed on steep, wet stones.

How do I treat blisters?

Clean the area, cover it with a blister plaster or tape and change socks regularly. Avoid popping blisters unless necessary. Rest and dry your feet in the evening.

What if I get a bad headache?

Stop, rest, drink water and tell your guide. If it worsens or comes with nausea, descend. Do not take strong medicines without advice.

Should I worry about wildlife?

Wildlife is rarely a problem. You may see monkeys, birds and deer. Do not feed animals, and keep food sealed.

Can I swim or wash in streams?

Avoid washing in streams, which are used by villages downstream. Use wet wipes or a small amount of warm water from the lodge.

What if I run out of cash?

There are no ATMs on the trail. Lodges may accept payment in advance only in cash. Bring more than you think you need and keep a reserve.
