Mardi Himal trek: quick planning answers

3 min read

How high is the Mardi Himal trek?

The View Point is at about 4,200 metres, and Mardi Himal Base Camp is at about 4,500 metres. High Camp, where most trekkers sleep before the final climb, is at about 3,550 metres.

How many days does it take?

Five to seven days from Pokhara to Pokhara is typical. Five is a brisk minimum, six is comfortable and seven allows extra rest or a second sunrise attempt.

Is it suitable for beginners?

It is suitable for active beginners with good fitness, a willingness to climb for several hours a day and an acceptance of simple lodges. It is steeper and more basic than Poon Hill.

What is the best month?

March to May and October to November. Spring offers rhododendrons, and autumn offers the clearest views. Winter is cold and the monsoon is wet with poor views.

Do I need a guide?

Rules vary and change. Many people trek independently in good seasons, but a guide is advisable in winter, monsoon, bad weather or for first-timers.

Is Mardi Himal crowded?

It is quieter than Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill, though it has become more popular. Peak weeks can be busy at High Camp.

Can I combine Mardi Himal with other treks?

Yes. Many trekkers combine it with Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp, usually by adding transfers in Pokhara and extra days.

Is there accommodation at the top?

Yes, simple lodges at High Camp, and a few higher in the View Point area. Facilities are basic and rooms are cold.

What is the best itinerary for Mardi Himal?

A six-day itinerary with a night at Low Camp and a night at High Camp is the most popular. It balances time and effort, offers a sunrise at the View Point and returns to Pokhara with a buffer.

Can I do Mardi Himal in four days?

A very fit trekker can complete a four-day version, but it is rushed, tiring and risky for altitude. Five days is a more realistic minimum.

Do I need previous trekking experience?

No, but some hiking experience helps. The trail is steep and lodges are basic, so people with no experience may find it hard. Poon Hill is a gentler first trek.

Can I trek in the monsoon?

It is possible but not recommended. Rain, leeches and cloud spoil views and make the trail slippery. Choose spring or autumn if you can.

Is Mardi Himal better than Poon Hill?

It is quieter and more adventurous but harder and more basic. Poon Hill is easier and more comfortable. The best choice depends on your priorities.
