The Mardi Himal trek is among the more affordable Himalayan treks. It is short, there are no flights to the trailhead and lodges are simple. Costs vary with group size, guide arrangements and transport, so understanding what drives the price helps you compare offers honestly.
What affects the price
- Trek length, from four to seven days.
- Solo, private group or shared departure.
- Guide and porter arrangements.
- Private car, tourist bus or local jeep to the trailhead.
- Hotel nights in Pokhara and Kathmandu.
- Season, with spring and autumn costing more.
What a good package includes
Pickup and drop, hotel nights in Pokhara, transport to Kande and back, a licensed guide, a porter if agreed, lodge accommodation, three meals a day on the trail, conservation permits and registration, staff wages and insurance, and taxes. Request a written list.
What is usually extra
International flights, visas, personal gear, travel insurance, drinks beyond tea or boiled water, showers, charging, wifi, tips and extra nights. Indian travellers should also add travel costs from home to Nepal.
Costs on the trail
Prices rise with altitude. High Camp is more expensive than Kande because supplies are carried up by hand or mule. Bring Nepali rupees in small notes, since cards and ATMs are not available above the roadhead.
Independent versus guided
Independent trekkers can save money, but must arrange transport, find lodges and manage navigation. A guided trek costs more but handles logistics, adds safety and often provides local knowledge. In winter or monsoon a guide is strongly recommended.
How to avoid surprises
Ask whether permits, taxes and tips are included, whether there is a surcharge for single rooms, what the cancellation policy is and what happens if weather forces a change. A transparent operator answers clearly.
A realistic expectations check
Because Mardi Himal is cheaper than many treks, some operators advertise very low prices. Check what is included. A genuine price covers a guide, lodging, meals, permits and transport. If a quote is far below others, ask why, and avoid operators who cannot explain.
Seasonal pricing
Prices rise in October and April and are lower in shoulder months. Group departures during festivals cost more. If your dates are flexible, ask for off-peak prices and compare.
Paying in advance
A deposit is normal. Ensure that the contract states cancellation terms and what happens if weather prevents the trek. Keep copies of invoices and receipts, and pay through traceable methods.
