The best months for Pikey Peak are March to May and October to November, for clear mornings and good views. Winter is cold, and the monsoon brings cloud and leeches.
A forgiving trek, with a best season for views
Because the altitude is moderate, Pikey Peak can be walked in most months. The important question is what you want to see, since the main prize is the sunrise panorama, which depends on clear skies.
Spring, March to May
The lower forest is full of rhododendron bloom, especially in April, and the days are warm. Haze builds toward the end of May, so far peaks look softer. Evenings at Jasmane Bhanjyang are cold but not severe.
Autumn, October and November
The classic season, with clean air and sharp views. Daytime walking is comfortable. Nights near the summit approach freezing by late November.
Winter, December to February
Very cold on the ridge, but often brilliantly clear. Snow can lie near the top, which makes the view beautiful and the climb slower. Bring a proper down jacket.
Monsoon, June to August
Wet and cloudy, with leeches on the lower trail and little chance of a view. The Dudh Kunda lake festival is held in the monsoon season, which can be a cultural reason to go, but not a scenic one.
Sunrise planning
The best sunrise views come when the sky is clear before dawn. Check the forecast the night before, and if the morning looks cloudy, consider waiting an extra day at the ridge. Most lodges accept this flexibility.
Temperature guide
Daytime temperatures in the villages range from about 12 to 20 degrees in spring and autumn, but at the summit before dawn it can be minus five or colder. Bring layers and keep a warm jacket in your day pack.
How to choose
April and October are the safest choices. See the access guide for flights and lodging.
