Pikey Peak is outside the Sagarmatha National Park entry gate, but local permits and fees may apply. Fees change, so confirm with your operator. Access is by road or a flight to Phaplu.
Permits
The standard route from Phaplu needs no special trekking permit. If you start from Shivalaya or Jiri, a Gaurishankar Conservation Area permit may be required, and you should carry passport photos. Regulations change, so we confirm for your dates.
Getting there by air
Small airlines fly daily from Kathmandu to Phaplu in about 40 minutes, weather permitting. Mornings are most reliable.
Getting there by road
Shared jeeps leave from a station near Bouddha in Kathmandu, and private jeeps offer flexibility. The journey is long and bumpy, so the flight is worth it if your budget allows.
Lodges, food and costs
Teahouses offer simple rooms, a broad menu and often a hot shower. Daily food and lodging costs are modest compared with the Everest region, though prices rise as you go higher.
Money, signal and charging
The only ATM is in Phaplu, so carry rupees. Mobile signal is available along much of the route and many lodges have Wi-Fi. The highest lodges have no electricity.
Flying to Phaplu
Planes are small, seat around 15 to 20 people, and leave in the morning. Weather delays are common, so allow a spare day. Baggage is limited to about 15 kg, so pack light.
Respecting the villages
Solu is Sherpa country. Dress modestly, greet with namaste or tashi delek and buy from village shops to support the local economy.
Common questions
- Do I need a guide? Not strictly, but a guide helps with route finding and lodges.
- Where do I sleep? In village lodges and homestays, with a simple lodge near the summit.
- How do I pay? In cash. There are few ATMs along the route.
