You need a Rara National Park entry permit and a trekking permit through a registered agency. Access is by air via Nepalgunj to Talcha or Jumla. Confirm fees and flight schedules when you book.
Permits
You need an entry permit for Rara National Park and usually a TIMS card, or the equivalent registration, for the region. Fees are set by the authorities and change, so we confirm the current amounts when you enquire.
Getting there
The standard route is a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then a flight to Jumla. A shorter option flies directly to the airstrip near the lake, but flights there are limited and weather-dependent. A road from Surkhet to Jumla exists but takes a day or more and is rough.
Weight limits and delays
Small aircraft limit baggage to about fifteen kilograms. Pack soft bags and leave the rest in Kathmandu. Plan a spare day at both ends, because Jumla flights are often delayed by cloud and wind.
Guides, porters and lodging
Camping is common on the longer route, though simple lodges exist in some villages. A guide and a porter-cook team are usual. Food on the trail is basic.
Money and connectivity
Carry rupees. Signal is poor, and charging is limited.
Getting to the lake by road
There is a long road route from Surkhet to Jumla that takes more than a day, and a rough road continues to the area near the lake. Most travellers prefer to fly because the road is slow and often blocked by landslides in the monsoon.
Respecting the park
Rara National Park enforces rules against plastic, soap and littering. Follow your guide's instructions, stay on marked paths and carry your waste out. The simplicity of the lodges is part of the protection of the lake.
A sample timeline for booking
Book internal flights at least a month ahead, as seats are limited. Permits are arranged by your operator during the week before departure. Pack soft bags and leave valuable items in Kathmandu. Reconfirm flights the day before travel.
If the flight is cancelled
Weather cancellations are common. Your operator will rebook you on the next available flight, and the itinerary may shift by a day. Keep your onward travel flexible.
