Teri La pass: facts, route and what makes it special

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Teri La is a high, rarely trekked pass that links the Nar Phu valley in the Annapurna region with Upper Mustang. It is usually done as a long camping trek from Koto through Nar Phu, over the pass, and down to Tange and Lo Manthang. It combines two restricted areas in one journey.

Key facts

Heights and times here are rounded. A lodge sign or your guide's GPS may differ by a little.

  • Height: about 5,540 m (some sources quote slightly higher).
  • Connects: the Nar Phu valley with Upper Mustang.
  • Typical route: Koto, Nar Phu, Teri La, Tange, Tsarang, Lo Manthang, Jomsom.
  • Length: about 21 days in total on a published itinerary, with around 13 trekking days.
  • Style: mixed lodge and wilderness camping, with crew and porters.
  • Permits: restricted-area permits for Nar Phu and Upper Mustang, plus ACAP and TIMS.

Why it is special

Few people cross it. The trek links the lush, remote Nar Phu valleys with the arid, windswept landscape of Upper Mustang, offering contrast and solitude.

A serious undertaking

Teri La is a long day over loose scree and steep slopes, with glacial terrain and weather that can turn bad. It is not technical in good conditions but is serious because of its remoteness.

Who it suits

  • Experienced high-altitude trekkers with three weeks.
  • People comfortable with camping and long days.
  • Those who want to link Nar Phu and Mustang.

How it differs from other Nepal pass treks

Many pass treks, like Thorong La or Cho La, are well supported by lodges and busy with trekkers. Teri La is the opposite: remote, camping-based and rarely crossed. That makes it more demanding but also more rewarding for those who value solitude. You are likely to see more wildlife and livestock than other trekkers.

Combining two cultures

Nar Phu villages are Tibetan-influenced and pastoral; Upper Mustang has a former kingdom, monasteries and a desert landscape. Crossing from one to the other lets you experience two distinct Himalayan cultures in a single journey.

Is it right for you?

If you have trekked at altitude, enjoyed camping and want a remote, authentic experience, Teri La is a strong candidate. If you prefer lodges and short days, choose Nar Phu or Upper Mustang separately.
