Thorong La pass day: an hour-by-hour timeline

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

A plan for the day helps you stay calm. This is a typical schedule from Thorong Phedi; subtract about an hour and a half if you sleep at High Camp.

The timeline

  1. 3:30 to 4:00 a.m. Wake, hot tea, light breakfast, final pack. Headlamp on.
  2. 4:30 a.m. Leave the lodge. Walk slowly, short steps, steady breathing.
  3. 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Sunrise on the upper slopes. Add warm layers; wind picks up.
  4. 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Reach the pass for most walkers. Photos, a hot drink in the tea shop if open, and no more than 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. 10:00 a.m. onward. Long descent to Muktinath, with a steep first section on loose ground.
  6. 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Arrive in Muktinath or Ranipauwa. Eat, rest, drink.

Turn-around rules

Agree with your guide on a time: if you are not near the pass by about 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., turn back. The weather usually worsens in the late morning.

Food and drink

  • Eat a proper breakfast even without appetite.
  • Carry warm tea in a flask and snacks that do not freeze.
  • Sip water regularly.

What to wear

  • Base layer, fleece, down jacket and windproof shell.
  • Warm hat, gloves with liners and a buff.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Poles for the descent.

After the pass

Rest properly. Fatigue and dehydration are common. See Muktinath on the Annapurna route and visiting the temple complex.

What to carry in your daypack

  • Water or tea (at least two litres, insulated if possible).
  • Snacks and a small lunch.
  • Down jacket, windproof shell, spare gloves and hat.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm.
  • Headlamp and spare batteries.
  • Camera or phone, kept warm.
  • A small first-aid kit and your medicines.

Pace and breathing

Walk slowly, in a steady rhythm, and breathe deeply. Rest-step on the steeper sections: pause briefly with each step to catch breath. Avoid stopping for long periods in the cold, and do not walk in a way that leaves you gasping. The aim is to arrive at the pass feeling tired but not exhausted.

What the pass is like

The pass is a saddle marked with prayer flags and a signboard. Expect cold wind, crowds in peak season, and a short celebration of photos. Many groups share hot tea or a snack at a tea house if it is open. The view east toward Mustang and west toward Manang is a reward for the effort.
