Manang has mobile coverage and Wi-Fi, but Tilicho Base Camp and the lake have none. Charging is paid and expensive at altitude.
Manang
Good signal and slow Wi-Fi in most lodges. Use it to download maps and send messages before you go higher.
Khangsar and base camp
Patchy to none. Do not rely on your phone.
Charging
Limited and costly at base camp. Bring a power bank and keep it warm.
Emergency
Guides carry radios or satellite phones. Ask your agency about the plan.
Manang as your communication base
Plan to send long messages and upload photos in Manang, where the signal and Wi-Fi are best. After leaving, expect silence for a day or two. Tell family that no news is normal and give them your guide's number.
Power and cold
The base camp lodge may have limited charging, and cold drains batteries fast. Carry a power bank of 20,000 mAh and keep it warm. Turn devices off when not in use.
Making Manang count
Manang has a little town feel: cafes, a bakery, a cinema in some seasons and Wi-Fi in several lodges. Use your rest day to upload photos, charge devices and speak to family. Leave with every battery full, because the next reliable charge will be at Tilicho Base Camp at a premium.
A paper backup
Write down your itinerary, your guide's name and number, and the contact for your operator. Keep a copy in your day bag and a copy with your guide. When phones fail, paper still works.
Preparation
Download maps and tell family when you will be out of contact. See lodges, food and packing.
Setting expectations at home
Tell relatives you will be out of touch beyond Manang. A short message before you leave the town is enough, and you can post updates when you return.
Protecting your electronics
Dust and cold are hard on devices. Keep them in zipped pouches, and charge fully whenever you can in Manang before the high stages.
Using Manang as your base
Do most of your messaging in Manang. Past Khangsar, signal is rare.
