Indian trekkers can walk to Tilicho Lake (about 4,919 m) without a visa, but the trek is high, remote and affected by landslides on the approach. It needs ten to fourteen days and careful acclimatisation.
Entry and documents
Indian citizens do not need a visa to enter Nepal and may arrive by air or by land. Carry a valid passport or voter ID card, which are the documents normally accepted, and check the current rules shortly before you travel because requirements can change. Keep photocopies and a digital copy in a separate bag. The route is inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you need its permit. Your agency arranges permits and tells you the current rules for the route.
Fitness and altitude
The lake is above 4,900 m, higher than most first treks. Build endurance and plan acclimatisation days at Manang. Prior experience at 4,000 m is helpful. See the acclimatisation guide.
Food and diet
Vegetarian dal bhat, noodles, soup and potato dishes are available in Manang and at Tilicho Base Camp. Jain food needs notice. Carry snacks for the long day to the lake.
Money
Withdraw Nepali rupees in Pokhara or Besisahar. ATMs are unreliable above Chame, and lodges prefer cash.
Weather and leave
Because the lake is high and the weather can close the route, build a reserve of two or three days. If you must be back at work on a fixed date, consider another trek, since rushing a high-altitude route increases risk. Choose October or May for the most predictable conditions.
Planning leave
Allow at least ten days plus travel from India, and add reserve days for landslides and weather. See the best time guide.
Seasonal leave planning
The best windows fall in autumn festival weeks, when crowds and prices rise. Apply for leave early and keep flexible dates for the trek.
Money and shopping in Manang
Carry enough rupees for the trek. Manang has simple shops, but supplies are limited and prices rise with altitude.
Fitness and food
Tilicho Lake, about 4,919 m, is a high trek. Build stamina with long walks and expect simple vegetarian meals in lodges.
