The best seasons for a Tilicho Peak climb are spring, from April to May, and autumn, from October to November. At this height weather windows are narrow, and the quality of the season matters more than for lower peaks. A spare-day plan is part of the climb, not an extra.
Autumn: October and November
Autumn is the main season. After the monsoon the air is clear and dry, and conditions on the glacier are usually good in October. November is colder and more windy, with very cold nights at high camps, but the skies can be exceptionally clear.
Spring: April and May
Spring is warmer and allows longer days, but weather is more variable, with afternoon cloud and snow showers. Fresh snow can affect route conditions and avalanche risk, so the guide must read conditions carefully.
Winter and monsoon
Winter is extremely cold, with high winds and heavy snow, and it is not suitable for most teams. The monsoon, from June to September, is the wrong time for the south-facing approaches, though Manang itself is drier than most of Nepal.
How to choose
- Choose October for the most stable weather and firm conditions.
- Choose April or May if you prefer warmer days and accept more variable weather.
Keep several spare days
High peaks often have only a few good summit days. Ask your operator how many spare days are built in, and be ready for the possibility of waiting for the window.
