Upper Mustang lies behind the Himalayan wall, so the monsoon that soaks most of Nepal reaches it only weakly. That gives you a longer window than most treks, though wind, cold and road conditions still shape the calendar.
Spring: March to May
Days warm up steadily, and the barren hills look sharp against a clear sky. Spring is also when the Tiji festival is usually held in Lo Manthang, and the exact dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar, so check them for the year you plan to go. Expect strong afternoon wind in the valley, which is a feature of the region in most seasons.
Summer and monsoon: June to August
The rain shadow makes this a realistic season for Upper Mustang, and the landscape is greener than usual. Heavy rain in the lower Kali Gandaki valley can still cause landslides on the road and delay flights to Jomsom, so build in spare days. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, and the trails are quieter.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn brings crisp air, clear light and settled weather. Harvest time colours the villages with golden fields. It is the busiest period, so book transport and lodges early. The restricted-area permit is priced the same per day, but check the current schedule for your dates.
Winter: December to February
It is very cold at night, and some lodges and shops in the higher villages close for the season. Snow may fall on the high passes. Experienced trekkers with proper gear can still go, but comfort is limited.
Wind
The Kali Gandaki valley is known for strong winds that build through the day. Early starts are the usual response, with walking done by early afternoon.
Our suggestion
If you want a balance of warmth, light and fewer crowds, aim for May or the early part of the summer window. For fine autumn colour and the most reliable weather, choose late September to October. Tell us your dates and we will check flights, roads and festival timing.
Reading the landscape through the year
The same village looks quite different from season to season. In spring the barley fields are being sown and the valleys are brown and open, with clear light and long views of the dry hills. In summer the fields turn green, apple and buckwheat appear in the lower villages and the cloudless blue sky contrasts with the red and ochre cliffs. Autumn brings golden harvest colours and sharp mountain views, while winter turns the region quiet, cold and snowy. Think about whether you prefer colour, clarity or solitude when you choose.
The wind is part of the plan
Almost every visitor remarks on the wind in the Kali Gandaki valley. It typically rises in late morning and blows strongly through the afternoon, so walking and flying schedules are arranged around it. Plan to start early, finish before the strongest gusts and carry a scarf or buff to protect your face from dust. Flights to Jomsom often leave early for the same reason, and delays are common in the afternoons.
Festivals and crowds
Festivals such as Tiji draw visitors and fill lodges in Lo Manthang, so book early if you want to attend. Outside festival dates the trails are quiet, with few other trekkers. If you enjoy solitude and a slower pace, a non-festival date may suit you better. Ask your operator about the current festival calendar before fixing your dates, because dates follow the lunar calendar and shift each year.
A quick planning note
- Book flights and permits early for the main spring and autumn seasons.
- Keep a spare day for flight or road delays.
- Pack for dry, sunny days and cold nights in every season.
Rain-shadow climate explained
Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, so it receives far less rain than most of Nepal. This is why summer trekking is possible when other regions are in monsoon. The landscape is dry and desert-like, with eroded cliffs and wide skies. Cold, wind and dust are the main weather factors rather than rain.
Choosing for photography
Autumn offers golden fields and clear air, spring brings blue skies and fewer people, and summer gives green valleys against red cliffs. Dawn and dusk light on the cliffs is outstanding in every season.
