Yala Peak base camp and high camp

2 min read

The approach to Yala Peak includes a night or two in tented camps above Kyanjin Gompa. Camp life is basic but friendly, and it is where you prepare for the summit push. Knowing what to expect makes the cold and the simple routine easier to accept.

Where the camps are

From Kyanjin Gompa the route climbs toward the Yala area. Operators set up a base camp and, in some plans, a higher camp closer to the summit ridge. Heights vary with the season and the route, and some camps lie between about 4,500 and 5,000 m. Your guide will explain which one is planned and why.

Tents and sleeping

You share a tent with another climber, with a foam mat and your own sleeping bag. Nights are very cold, and a sleeping bag rated to about minus 15 to minus 20 degrees is wise. A hot water bottle, a warm hat and clean dry socks make a big difference. Many people sleep lightly at altitude, which is normal.

Food and water

A cook and kitchen staff serve hot meals in a dining tent. Typical food includes porridge, eggs, pasta, rice, soup and tea. Drink plenty of water and warm drinks, because dry air and altitude cause dehydration. Staff boil or treat water for you.

Skills practice

At camp the guides teach or refresh basic skills, such as putting on crampons, walking on snow, using an ascender and moving on a rope. Practise until the movements feel natural, because fumbling with gear in the cold is tiring.

Toilets and hygiene

Camps normally have a basic toilet tent. Use it, and carry out your waste when requested. Use wipes and hand sanitiser, and keep your tent tidy.

Why some plans skip high camp

A high camp shortens summit day but is colder, more basic and needs gear carried up. Some operators prefer a base camp only plan, with a longer summit day. Ask which one is planned and what the advantages are for your fitness and sleep.

Staying in touch

Mobile signal is patchy above Kyanjin. Your guide may carry a radio or satellite phone for safety. Ask how emergencies and weather forecasts are handled.
