Yala Peak needs a mix of trekking and mountaineering gear. Much of the technical equipment can be rented in Kathmandu, but personal clothing, boots and small items should be tested before you arrive. The list below is a guide, so check it with your operator, because plans and seasons differ.
Clothing system
- Thermal base layers, two sets.
- Fleece or light insulated mid layers.
- A warm down jacket for camp and summit day.
- Hard shell jacket and trousers.
- Insulated trousers for summit day.
- Liner gloves and warm insulated mittens or gloves.
- Warm hat, sun hat, balaclava and buff.
- Several pairs of wool socks and liner socks.
Footwear
Mountaineering or high-altitude boots that accept crampons are normal for the summit. Bring comfortable trekking boots for the approach and camp shoes for evenings. Break in all boots before the trip to avoid blisters.
Technical equipment
- Harness, helmet and climbing gloves.
- Crampons and an ice axe.
- Ascender, belay device and locking carabiners.
- Trekking poles for the approach.
Most operators supply or rent these items, but ask which are included. Check fit and wear, and try crampons on your boots before you leave Kathmandu.
Sleeping and carrying
Bring a sleeping bag rated to around minus 15 to minus 20 degrees, a liner, a duffel bag for porters and a daypack of 30 to 40 litres. Carry a headlamp with spare batteries and a thermos.
Small essentials
Sunglasses with glacier-quality lenses, sun cream, lip balm, a personal first-aid kit, blister plasters and rehydration salts. Pack snacks you like, because appetite can change at altitude.
Rent or bring
Rent technical gear and perhaps a down jacket in Kathmandu, but bring boots, base layers, gloves and your sunglasses from home. Weigh your bag to stay within porter and flight limits.
