About the Everest helicopter tour

What is the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour?

A one-day flight from Kathmandu via Lukla and Pheriche to the Everest region, with views of Base Camp and Kala Patthar and breakfast at the Everest View Hotel near Syangboche.

Do we land at Base Camp?

Our page describes brief landings, but it also notes that landing points are restricted. In practice you may be taken to Gorakshep or Kala Patthar when permitted, and the pilot decides. Treat landings as not guaranteed.

How many people fly together?

Up to five passengers. A group of four or five may fly in two shuttle flights.

How long does it take?

A full day. The route is Kathmandu, Lukla (fuel), Pheriche, a flyover of Base Camp, Everest View Hotel breakfast, Lukla and back.

Weather and flight conditions

What if the weather turns?

Flights depend on clear weather. The pilot can change the route or cancel. We rebook the next suitable day, subject to availability.

Can I get altitude sickness?

Yes, even on a short stop above 5,000m if you land. Tell the pilot and guide if you feel unwell. A landing at altitude is brief.

Is it suitable for children and older travellers?

Often yes, but check with a doctor if you have heart, lung or ear problems.

What should I wear?

Layers, sunglasses and warm shoes, because it is cold at altitude.

Costs, permits and insurance

What is included?

The helicopter, government taxes, sightseeing on the itinerary, permits, a guide and hotel transfers. The page says insurance for passengers is included while the FAQ treats insurance as your responsibility, so ask us for the exact cover.

What is not included?

The national park permit, airport tax, meals, accommodation and drinks, according to our page.

Do I still need my own insurance?

We recommend it, because the helicopter operator's passenger cover may not include medical evacuation or delay cost.

Departures run daily in season. Spring and autumn offer the clearest weather.
