Stand on a 6,000m summit at sunrise with Everest in view. This 18-day Lobuche East climbing expedition from Kathmandu builds on the classic Khumbu trek. You walk to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), then continue to Lobuche Base Camp for climbing training and a pre-dawn summit push. From the top, the panorama takes in Everest and the peaks of the Tibetan side of the range.

The route is paced for gradual acclimatization, with rest days at Namche and Dingboche and a second acclimatization and training day at Lobuche Base Camp before the summit attempt. Experienced Sherpa guides lead the climb at a ratio of two climbers to one guide, and climbing gear, including boots, is included. It is a step up in difficulty from Island Peak, so it suits fit trekkers who want a real mountaineering challenge.

Day 1 - Kathmandu: Arrival Day

Altitude: 1,350m/4,428ft

Welcome to Kathmandu, the capital and cultural hub of Nepal! We'll be waiting with a warm greeting and easy transfer to your hotel. Take a rest after the long flight and explore Thamel the hub of Kathmandu.

Day 2 - Kathmandu: Preparation

Altitude: 1,350m/4,428ft

Today our team will meet with you in the early afternoon to review the gear you have brought and to take you to the gear rental shop. We will make sure you have quality climbing boots that fit well before you head off to the mountain. Plan on an evening briefing on last-minute specifics about your trek and an early lights-out: you have a big day ahead.

Day 3 - Kathmandu to Lukla Flight and Phakding

Altitude: 2,800m/9184ft (Lukla) & 2,652m/8,698ft (Phakding)
Walking Distance: 8km (3-4 hours)
*

Flight time: 15 min from Ramecchap
Drive time: 4 hours & 30mins (Kathmandu to Ramecchap)

After a short morning flight to Lukla, you'll be introduced to your guide and porter. Kick off your trek with an easy walk through Chaurikharka village and descent towards Dudhkoshi Ghat (2,530m/8,300ft). The trail follows the bank of the Dudhkoshi River until Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft), where we will be staying for the night to acclimatize. Enjoy your free time in Phakding, a popular stopping point.

Please Read: Lukla Flights are departing and returning to Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu due to ongoing upgrades at Kathmandu Airport. Its about a 4 hour drive to Ramechhap from Kathmandu so we will get started for the airport around 2 am. The return drive at the end of the trek is between 4 and 6 hours depending on traffic.

Day 4 - Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Altitude: 3,440m/11,283ft
Walking Distance: 10-12km (5-6 hours)

We'll have breakfast in Phakding before gearing up for the trek to Namche Bazaar, the biggest sherpa village in Nepal. Our trail takes us first over the Dudhkoshi River via a long suspension bridge, and then through a beautiful pine forest to Monjo, about two hours away. Soon thereafter, we will approach the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park for a brief permit check and then descend to Dudh Kosi River (spotting Mani stones along the way!) en route to Jorsale. Lunch will be served here, and then it's uphill to Namche. Our path along the riverbank is flanked by two crossings, one of which is the Hillary Suspension Bridge. It's a tough climb up the hill to our resting place, but you'll be rewarded in Namche Bazaar with your first glimpse of Everest in its majesty.

Day 5 - Namche Bazaar: Rest and Acclimatization Day

Altitude: 3,440m/11,283ft

At this point, we take a well-deserved break! Today will be spent resting and allowing our bodies to become acclimatized to the lofty altitude. There's an optional 2 hour hike to Everest View Point, an uphill walk that will help speed acclimatization. Otherwise, spend the day exploring Namche Bazaar. Check out the Sherpa museum for an overview of the Sherpa culture and history of mountaineering. On Saturdays, the Hatt Bazaar is open for trading and an intimate look at the locals' marketplace. It is part of the larger Namche Bazaar, a shopping hub filled with all manner of trekking and mountaineering clothing and equipment.

Day 6 - Namche Bazaar to Phortse

Altitude: 3,700m/12,139ft
Walking Distance: 10km (6 hours)

Breakfast in Namche Bazaar fuels us for another day of trekking towards Everest Base Camp today! Breathtaking views of the Himalayas - Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kwangde - are some of the highlights not be missed. Our destination, Phortse, is known as one of the most beautiful places in the Everest region. Its views, which include Ama Dablam, are legendary.

Day 7 - Phortse to Dingboche

Altitude: 4,400m/14,435ft
Walking Distance: 11km (6 hours)

The trail today parallels the canyon of the raging Imja Khol River with its glacial blue waters. Its a gradual climb up to the village of Pangboche, the biggest settlement of Sherpas in the region. Enjoy a great opportunity to observe a typical Sherpa village and have lunch with the locals! The intrepid can brave a brief hike to the Pangboche monastery, one of the oldest in the area. Our afternoon trek will be a difficult one, as the landscape gives way to dry, deserted mountains and we hike towards Dingboche.

Note: During winter season if snow is on the trail we will use the route via Debouche and Tengboche as an alternate.

Day 8 - Dingboche: Rest and Acclimatization Day

Altitude: 4,400m/14,435ft

This is your chance to rest up before the last leg of our adventure! Savor a full day of exploring Dingboche and the surrounding valleys of Chhukung and Imja, the latter of which links with Island Peak, the high passes of Amphu Laptsa, and Makalu Barun National Park. Taking an optional trek to the valleys will pay off in rewarding views, but taking it easy is the most important thing today. You'll need your rest for the penultimate day of ascent tomorrow.

Day 9 - Dingboche to Lobuche

Altitude: 4,900m/16,076ft
Walking Distance: 11-12km (6-7 hours)

The next part of our adventure brings over craggy mountain terrain to Lobuche, a small settlement with amazing views of Mt. Lobuche, Mt. Pumari and the Nuptse. Prepare to snuggle up for a cold night, as we are now almost three miles above sea level and the evenings can be downright chilly!

Day 10 - Lobuche to Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp

Altitude: 5180m/16,994ft (Gorekshep) & 5364m/17598 (EBC)
Walking Distance: 15km (6-8 hours)

Our day kicks off with an initial, relatively easy trek from Lobuche to Gorekshep. The subsequent, straight trail to Everest Base Camp is harder, involving rocky dunes and moraine, formed accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris. On the way to our destination, we'll approach the famed Khumbu Glacier and icefall, located on the slopes of Everest. At the Base Camp, our goal, you'll have the chance (during the spring climbing season) to meet climbers attempting to scale the mountain's summit. Break out your cameras for unbelievable views of breathtaking beauty.

Day 11 - Gorakshep to Lobuche Base Camp

It's a five hour trek to the Lobuche Base Camp (LBC). The rocky moraine is steep and unforgiving, and you might think your hard work is over once we get to the LBC. We still have climbing training, however!

Day 12 - Lobuche Base Camp: Acclimatization Day

We have another acclimatization day planned today, along with additional climbing training to prepare you for our summit push tomorrow. Practice thoroughly, and then rest up - we'll awake before the sun tomorrow.

Day 13 - Summit Lobuche East, Return to Base Camp

We'll be trekking for ten full hours today in our push to summit Lobuche! The 2am wakeup call is tough, but it will allow us to attain the peak just as the sun is rising, showing off the panoramic views of the Himalayas backlit by the brilliant rays of dawn. Savor the best views to be found from any peak, and take lots of pictures, then we'll trek back down to camp.

Day 14 - Lobuche Base Camp to Dingboche

We finally begin the long road back home as we descend from the LBC towards Dingboche. The trail meets up with the path back from the EBC, making for excellent company!

Day 15 - Dingboche to Namche Bazaar

The path is becoming easier as we trek downhill towards Namche Bazaar, and it's much less work this time around to literally stop and smell the flowers - thick forests of rhododendron and juniper in glorious red and pink bloom.

Day 16 - Namche to Phakding and Lukla

Altitude: 2,800m/9,184ft
Walking Distance: 16km (6-8 hours)

After breakfast, we trek toward the Hillary Suspension Bridge and then pass through several local villages. Our arrival in Lukla brings an evening in a proper hotel and, traditionally, a party with your trekking crew: you made it! Thanks to great teamwork and perseverance, you've accomplished a physical feat of which others only dream. This is your last night on the mountain, which can be bittersweet.

Day 17 - Lukla to Kathmandu

In the morning, you'll hop a brief flight from Lukla to Kathmandu (See Note), where your journey both began and ends. You'll transfer to your hotel upon landing for some much-needed solo rest and reflection after your trek conquering the Himalayas. We'll reunite in the evening for a farewell dinner at one of the best Nepalese restaurants in town, where we'll be eager to hear your feedback on the trip.

Please Read: Lukla Flights are departing and returning to Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu due to ongoing upgrades at Kathmandu Airport. Its about a 4 to 6 hour drive from Ramechhap back to Kathmandu depending on traffic.

Day 18 - Kathmandu: Departure Day

It's your last day in Nepal! Grab some breakfast, and then take in some last-minute shopping in Kathmandu. We'll make sure you arrive at Kathmandu International Airport with plenty time before your flight home. At this time, we'll say our goodbyes and bid you farewell, armed with warm memories and gorgeous photos to show your loved ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Lobuche East

How high is Lobuche East and what is the climb like?

Lobuche East rises to 6,119m above the village of Lobuche, on the Everest Base Camp trail. The climb crosses rock, a steep snow and ice slope and a narrow summit ridge, and it is more demanding than Island Peak.

What is the structure of the 18-day trip?

You trek via Namche and Dingboche to Lobuche and visit Everest Base Camp (Day 10). Then you move to Lobuche Base Camp (Day 11), spend a day acclimatising and training (Day 12), summit on Day 13 and descend to Dingboche, Namche and Lukla.

Why is Lobuche East considered a step up from Island Peak?

The upper section includes more exposed rock and sustained steep ground, so you need to move confidently with a harness and rope. The summit day is long, about 10 hours round trip from base camp.

Do I see Everest from the top?

Yes. The summit gives wide views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Makalu, and the Khumbu glacier below. Clear mornings give the best views.

Who should attempt it

Can a beginner climb Lobuche East?

It is possible with high fitness, prior trekking above 4,500m and a willingness to learn rope skills, but it is harder than Island Peak. If this is your first Himalayan climb, consider Island Peak or Mera first, or speak to us about your experience.

What technical skills will I use?

Walking in crampons, ascending fixed rope with a jumar, abseiling and moving on mixed rock and snow. We cover the basics on the acclimatisation day at Lobuche Base Camp.

What fitness do I need?

A strong base for 6 to 8 hours of walking daily for two weeks, then a 10-hour summit day. Train for at least three months, including weighted hikes and strength work for the legs and core.

How many climbers per guide?

Two climbers per guide. The guide leads each rope team and decides whether the attempt continues. That decision is final.

Altitude and acclimatisation

How does this itinerary prepare me for 6,119m?

You sleep at Namche (3,440m), Dingboche (4,400m), Lobuche (4,900m) and Gorakshep (5,180m) and visit Everest Base Camp (5,364m) before the climb. A rest day at Lobuche Base Camp follows. This is as good a preparation as most schedules offer.

What if I feel unwell on the way?

Tell your guide immediately. Headache, nausea, dizziness and poor sleep are early warning signs. Your guide checks your oxygen saturation daily and decides whether you go up, rest or go down. Extra days on the mountain are INR 6,000 per day, covering stay and three meals.

What if the weather blocks the summit?

We wait for a window if the schedule allows. Otherwise we turn around. The guide's call is final and no refund is given for unused days.

Permits, gear and logistics

Which permits are needed?

An NMA climbing permit for Lobuche East and the trekking and Sagarmatha National Park permits, all arranged as part of the package once we receive your passport scan.

What gear does the package supply?

Climbing boots, harness and helmet, with a baggage allowance of 20 kg (44 lbs) per person. Ask us for the full list, including crampons, ice axe and ascender, and which items you bring.

What are the rental costs for sleeping bag and down jacket?

About INR 100 per item per day, for a sleeping bag or a down jacket. Collect them at the pre-flight briefing.

Where do we sleep at Lobuche Base Camp?

In tents, with meals prepared by your Sherpa guide's team. In the villages you stay in teahouses and lodges, and in Lukla and Kathmandu in hotels.

Do flights run from Ramechhap?

Yes, Lukla flights currently depart and return via Ramechhap, about 5 to 6 hours by road from Kathmandu, depending on road conditions. Delays are common, so keep two to four spare days at the end of your trip.

Insurance and safety

What insurance is mandatory?

A policy that covers mountaineering on a trekking peak up to at least 6,119m, emergency medical care and helicopter evacuation. Many standard policies stop at 4,000m. Send us a copy in advance, and see the insurance section of our terms.

What happens in an emergency?

Your guide contacts the Himalayan Wonders Adventure Pvt. Ltd. office in Kathmandu, which coordinates with your insurer. You are responsible for medical and evacuation costs. A helicopter may cost USD 5,000 or more.

Who are the guides and porters?

They are employees of Himalayan Wonders Adventure Pvt. Ltd., our Nepal operator, and the licensed climbing guides lead every summit attempt. Meet them on the team page.

What is the age limit?

Permits are currently available from age 17, with guardian rules for younger people. Please confirm before booking because rules can change.

Costs and extras

How much extra money should I plan for?

About USD 300 to 400 (INR 25,000 to 40,000) for tips and extras. Showers are INR 200 to 300, bottled water INR 100 to 300, charging INR 100 to 400 and Wi-Fi INR 300 to 500 per hour in some teahouses. Prices rise with altitude.

What if my flight is cancelled?

We rebook you. A chartered helicopter may be possible for USD 600 or more (INR 65,000 or more), and we refund USD 150 of the flight fare if you use it (INR 10,000 for Indian nationals). Extra hotel nights and meals are your cost.

Where do we stay in Kathmandu?

Three nights bed and breakfast at Hotel The Address Kathmandu in Thamel. Extra nights cost INR 3,000 (single), 3,500 (double) or 4,500 (triple) and are paid directly to the hotel.

Money, booking and cancellations

How do I pay for the Lobuche East climb?

Pay a deposit before you travel. Indian guests pay by bank transfer or UPI, since we do not take credit cards in India. Guests outside India can pay by transfer or online card (4.5% processing fee). You settle the balance at our Kathmandu office on arrival in INR, USD, EUR, GBP or another major currency, at the NPR conversion rate on the date of payment (local conversion charges apply); cards used in Nepal add 13%, so cash is cheaper.

Is my deposit refundable?

50% is refundable for 30 days after you book, and after that it is not. The deposit remains valid for 365 days and can be moved to any trek or climb we offer. If you do not contact us and do not arrive, it is forfeited.

Can I change my climbing dates?

Yes. Rescheduling is free as many times as you need with at least 6 weeks' notice. With 2 to 6 weeks' notice a fee of INR 5,000 (Indian guests) or USD 100 (other guests) applies, and any change needs at least 14 days' notice. You pay any price increase between the old and new date.

What if I leave the Lobuche East trip early?

We cannot refund unused days or services, because the guides and porters are paid for the whole period. We help you return, but extra hotel nights, meals and flight changes are your cost. Some insurers reimburse unused days, so check your policy.

Do I pay extra for a solo climb?

There is no single supplement for rooms. Rooms are shared by gender, and couples, families and friends share together. If you climb solo, meaning you are the only person booked on a fixed departure or you are not joining a group, an additional INR 20,000 is mandatory. It covers your solo climb arrangements and a dedicated porter. We tell you at booking, or as soon as it arises.
