Best time for the Annapurna Base Camp trek

4 min read

The two best windows for the Annapurna Base Camp trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). Both offer stable weather, clear mornings and open trails. The choice between them is mostly about whether you prefer flowers and warmth or crisp air and long, sharp views.

Spring: March to May

Spring brings rhododendron blossom to the middle sections of the route, especially in March and April. Days are warmer and nights at base camp are less severe than in winter. The air is hazier in the afternoon, and cloud tends to build later in the day, so you should plan to reach viewpoints early. Spring is also the time when lingering snow in the upper valley can make the Deurali to MBC stretch slower and avalanche awareness more important.

Autumn: late September to November

Autumn follows the monsoon, so the air is washed clean and the mountains stand out against deep blue sky. This is the busiest season, and lodges at MBC and ABC can fill, which makes early booking valuable. Nights grow colder as November progresses, and by late November the upper valley can be properly freezing.

Winter: December to February

Winter has the clearest skies and the fewest people, but nights at altitude can fall far below freezing and heavy snow may close sections of the upper valley. Some lodges close for the season. Winter treks are possible with warm gear and flexible dates, but they suit experienced trekkers more than beginners.

Monsoon: June to September

Rain, leeches in the lower forest, landslides and cloud-covered views make the monsoon a hard time for this trek. The upside is empty trails and green landscapes, but most people find the trade-off poor for a first visit.

Choosing between the two main seasons

  • Pick March and April if you love flowers, longer days and warmer lower valleys.
  • Pick October and early November for the sharpest views and the most stable weather.
  • Avoid the peak holiday weeks if you want quieter lodges and easier booking.

Weather advice that works in any month

Mornings are almost always clearer than afternoons, so schedule your key views early. Carry layers for a swing of 20 degrees between daytime valley and night at base camp. Watch the forecast for the days before you reach Deurali, because new snow changes the plan more than anything else. A guide who checks local reports and talks with other groups is worth having.

What the trail looks like in each month

March has rhododendrons in the lower hills and still carries snow near the top. April brings the best mix of flowers, long days and clear mornings. May is warmer but hazier. September and early October still carry some monsoon cloud. Late October and November give the sharpest views. December and January are cold and dramatic. February is quiet with unpredictable snow. Knowing these patterns helps you decide whether you want colour, clarity or solitude.

Festival and holiday periods

Dashain and Tihar in autumn and school holidays in India bring many travellers and can fill lodges. If you want a quieter experience, choose dates a week or two outside these peaks. Booking early secures lodge space, particularly at MBC and ABC where beds are limited.

Packing by season

  • Spring: light layers for the lower valley, a warm jacket for MBC and ABC, a rain shell.
  • Autumn: similar, with a warmer sleeping bag from late October.
  • Winter: expedition-grade layers, gaiters, microspikes and a very warm bag.

A note on climate change and snow

Snowfall patterns vary from year to year. A dry winter may leave the sanctuary almost clear, while a heavy snowfall can delay groups for days. Treat any month's description as a guide, not a guarantee, and keep a flexible mindset.
