Annapurna Circuit: trek solo, with a partner or in a group?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Annapurna Circuit can be walked independently in good weather, but a guide or group adds safety at altitude and on the Thorong La crossing. Solo trekkers should choose their season carefully and treat acclimatisation seriously.

Trekking solo

The trail is well used and lodges are plentiful, so route finding is rarely hard. The risks are altitude, weather and being alone if you fall ill. Tell your lodge where you are going, keep a charged phone and a power bank, and never cross Thorong La alone in poor visibility or after fresh snow. If you feel unwell, descend rather than rest and hope.

Trekking with a partner

Two people share decisions and can watch each other for symptoms such as headache, confusion and loss of coordination. Agree on a rule before you start: if either person has worsening symptoms, you both stop or go down. That rule is more useful than any gadget.

Hiring a guide or porter

A guide handles lodge bookings, understands the weather patterns and recognises altitude illness early. A porter carries your bag so that you can walk comfortably at height. Both are affordable compared with the cost of an evacuation, and both support local families.

Joining a group

Group departures suit people who want company, fixed costs and less planning. The pace is set for the group, so check that it includes enough rest days and a sensible plan for Thorong La. Smaller groups are easier to manage at a busy pass and in crowded high-season lodges.

What a guide costs you and saves you

A licensed guide adds a daily fee and a share of lodging and meals, but he or she also handles permits, books rooms ahead of you in October and keeps an eye on your pace. On a pass day that experience matters more than the money. Ask your operator for a written itinerary that lists rest days.

A realistic choice

If this is your first big trek, choose a guided small group or a private guide. If you have high-altitude experience and sound judgement, going solo in October is possible. Read the first-timer mistakes guide before deciding.
