Chulu East (about 6,580 m) and Chulu West (about 6,420 m) are trekking peaks in the Manang district of the Annapurna region, close to the Annapurna Circuit. They are popular with climbers who want a serious but non-expedition climb, with views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu.
Where they are
The peaks rise north of Manang, with approaches from Ledar or Yak Kharka on the circuit side, and Pisang to the east. They can be combined with the Annapurna Circuit and Thorong La.
Chulu East and Chulu West
Chulu East is higher and more technical. Chulu West is slightly lower and often chosen for a first 6,000 m climb. Details change by season and snow.
Why people choose them
They give a big view with a manageable climb. Added to a circuit trek, the trip is varied and rewarding.
Skills
You need to use crampons, an ice axe and a harness, and be comfortable on snow slopes and crevasse terrain.
Who they suit
Fit trekkers with some altitude experience who want a bigger objective, ideally with previous climbing practice.
What to pack
Bring mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe, a warm down jacket, gloves of two weights and goggles. Rent technical gear in Kathmandu.
Questions people ask first
