Chulu West and East are demanding trekking peaks. The altitude is above 6,400 m, summit day is long and cold, and the route includes steep snow and crevasses. You should have trekked high, and ideally have climbed before.
Altitude
The summits are above 6,400 m, so acclimatisation is critical. Follow the schedule and descend if symptoms appear.
Terrain
Snow slopes, crevasses and some steeper sections, often on fixed rope.
Weather
Wind and cold are common. Plan for early starts and turn back if conditions are poor.
Equipment
Mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe and warm layers are required.
Experience
Previous climbing at 5,500 m or more helps. If you are new, start with a lower trekking peak.
How to train
Train for three to six months with long hikes with a pack, stairs and cardio. Add practice with crampons and rope if you can.
Deciding to turn back
A good guide will turn back when conditions demand it. The summit is optional, and getting home is not.
Plan it
See the itinerary.
