The Dhaulagiri Circuit is one of the most demanding treks in Nepal. It combines long days, camping, glacier travel and two high passes above 5,200 m, so it needs strong fitness, good gear and experience.
One of the hardest non-technical treks in Nepal
The difficulty of Dhaulagiri comes from combination: weeks of camping, long walking days, glacier travel, two high passes and remoteness. There is no climbing technique required in normal conditions, but there is exposure, rough ground and the possibility of storms.
Altitude profile
The trek rises from about 850 m at Beni to the Italian Base Camp at 3,660 m, to the Dhaulagiri Base Camp at 4,740 m, and then up to the French Pass at roughly 5,360 m and Hidden Valley at around 5,000 m. Sleeping height at Hidden Valley is the highest of the trek and the most difficult for altitude. A rest day at the Italian Base Camp is strongly advised.
The hardest days
The day to Muri on the lower section is strenuous, but the toughest days are the glacier approach, the French Pass day and the descent from Hidden Valley. They demand an early start, careful footing and reliable weather. Some groups carry crampons and an ice axe for the pass.
Who should go
You should have previous multi-day high-altitude trekking, a base of regular training and a willingness to camp in the cold. This is not a first trek.
Training plan
Start a training programme at least three months before departure. Include long weekend hikes with a loaded pack, hill repeats, and a couple of back-to-back days of six to eight hours. Cardio work, such as cycling or running, builds endurance, and leg strength work protects the knees on the long descents.
Mental preparation
Three weeks of camping, basic food and cold nights wear on people. A flexible attitude, patience with delays and the ability to enjoy small comforts like hot tea are as important as fitness.
Safety
Use a guide and crew experienced in the route, a reserve day for weather, and insurance that covers helicopter evacuation. Descent is the key response to altitude sickness, but on the pass days descent may take hours. Read permits and logistics.
