Everest is visible from several places in the Khumbu, at different heights and with different views. Visibility depends on weather, and clouds are common by afternoon.
Viewpoints, lowest to highest
Altitudes and walking times on this page are approximate and differ a little between maps, GPS devices and lodges. Treat them as planning figures, not survey data.
- Everest View area above Namche. Everest appears small in the distance between Lhotse and Nuptse. Good on a rest day.
- Everest View Hotel and Khumjung ridge (about 3,880 m). A classic early-morning view.
- Tengboche (about 3,860 m). Ama Dablam is the star, and Everest peeks over the Nuptse ridge.
- Dingboche ridge (about 4,800 m). A wide mountain panorama, with Lhotse and Makalu.
- Gokyo Ri (about 5,357 m). A broad view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu.
A different kind of view
Gokyo Ri is often considered a better view than Kala Patthar because Everest stands out against a wider panorama. See Gokyo guides.
Choosing by effort
For the least effort, visit the Everest View area on your Namche rest day. For the most reward with similar altitude, add Gokyo Ri on a longer route. See the Gokyo route.
Weather and timing
Mornings are clearest. Clouds usually build in the afternoon, so views are poor after about 10 a.m. Winter and the post-monsoon weeks are best.
Photography
Use a stable mount, warm batteries and a lens hood. A long lens flattens the peaks and makes Everest appear larger.
What to expect from each viewpoint
- Namche area: short walk, small view, good first look.
- Tengboche: Ama Dablam is the star; Everest is a quiet shape behind.
- Dingboche ridge: wide, high, and cold in the wind.
- Gokyo Ri: the most complete panorama outside Kala Patthar.
Cloud and timing
Cloud builds as the day warms. For the best chance, arrive at a viewpoint before 8 a.m., carry a hot drink and wait. Clear patches often open for a few minutes at a time.
