Everest Base Camp planning: quick answers

5 min read

How long is the Everest Base Camp trek in distance?

The round trip from Lukla to base camp and back is roughly 130 km, though the exact figure depends on the route and side trips. The distance matters less than the climb, because most days involve a lot of ascent and descent.

Do I need a guide for Everest Base Camp?

Yes. Since 31 March 2023, trekkers on the Everest routes must be accompanied by a licensed guide and carry a TIMS card issued through a registered trekking agency. Book through an agency that handles both.

Do I need a porter?

A porter is optional but popular. They carry your main bag, which lets you walk with a light daypack. Agree on a weight limit, and make sure the porter is properly paid, equipped and insured.

How much should I tip?

Tipping is customary, usually given as a group at the end of the trek. Ask your operator for typical guidance, because amounts depend on group size and the length of the trek. Give it directly and thank the team.

Can I do the trek in a short holiday?

A comfortable plan takes at least twelve days in Nepal. Shortening it means fewer acclimatisation days, which raises the risk of altitude sickness, so use a helicopter on the descent rather than rushing the ascent.

How far ahead should I book?

For October, November, April and May, book several months ahead because flights and lodging are busy. For off-season treks, a few weeks is often enough.

Is the trek safe?

Most trekkers complete it without serious problems. The main risks are altitude illness, cold, stomach problems and falls. A slow pace, rest days, insurance and honest reporting of symptoms reduce them greatly.

Can I trek alone as a woman?

Many women trek in groups or with a guide, and the trail is generally regarded as welcoming. Use ordinary precautions, choose reputable lodges, and consider a female guide if that is available.

What language do I need?

Guides and most lodge owners speak English well enough for basic needs. Learning a few Nepali greetings such as namaste and dhanyabad is always appreciated.

What is the best way to get to Kathmandu from India?

Most people fly from a major Indian city. Overland travel by road or rail and bus is also possible through border crossings, but it takes longer, so allow plenty of margin before your trek starts.

Is Everest Base Camp open all year?

The trail is open all year, but conditions vary. Spring and autumn are the most reliable seasons, while winter is cold and the monsoon is wet with frequent flight disruption.

Can children do the trek?

Some families trek with older children, but altitude affects young people too, and they may not describe symptoms clearly. Take it slowly, plan extra days, and discuss it with a paediatrician first.

What is the difference between a teahouse trek and a camping trek?

On the standard Everest route, trekkers sleep in teahouses, which are family-run lodges offering a simple room and meals. This means you do not carry a tent, stove or food, and your pack stays light. A camping trek uses tents and a support crew and is rarely used on this route, although it is possible in some remote areas. For most visitors, teahouses are the more comfortable, flexible and culturally rich choice, and they provide shelter if the weather changes quickly.

How fit do I need to be before I book?

You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be able to walk for five or six hours a day, several days in a row, carrying a light daypack. A good test is whether you can complete a long hilly hike on a weekend and walk again the next day without feeling exhausted. Start a training plan at least two months before departure, and tell your operator about any health issues when you book so that the plan can be adapted.

Can I extend the trek or add side trips?

Yes, many itineraries can be extended with extra rest days, a visit to Gokyo, a walk to Chukhung or a detour to a monastery or museum. Extra days improve acclimatisation and give you more flexibility if the weather changes. Discuss options with your operator before you book, because additional days affect price, lodge availability and the schedule of your guide and porters. Make sure any changes are agreed in writing.

What should I ask before paying a deposit?

Ask what the price includes and excludes, how many people are in the group, what the cancellation and refund policy is, who your guide will be and what experience he or she has. Ask about insurance for the guide and porters, the arrangement for rescue, and what happens if flights are delayed. A reliable operator will answer clearly and give you the terms in writing. If answers are vague, treat that as a warning.

Can I trek if I have never been to altitude before?

Yes. Many people complete the trek on their first high-altitude trip. The key is to ascend slowly, include rest days, drink plenty of water and be honest about symptoms. A trek with a gradual itinerary and an experienced guide is safer than a rushed one. Some people choose to do a shorter, lower-altitude trek first to learn how they respond, which can build confidence for a longer journey later.
