Everest Base Camp with children: ages, pace and planning

3 min read

There is no official age limit on the Everest Base Camp trek, and families with children as young as around seven have completed it, while trekkers in their late seventies have also made it. The deciding factors are health, motivation and good planning, not the number on the passport.

Is your child ready?

A child who enjoys long walks, is comfortable with several days of five to eight hours on foot and can tell you honestly how they feel is a good candidate. Young children are less able to describe early altitude symptoms, so adults must watch for changes such as unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, irritability or a persistent headache.

Why a private trek works best

A family does best on a private departure with a flexible pace. You control the rest breaks, the start times and the choice of lodging. We also suggest building in a few extra days, so that a slow day or a bad weather day does not force a rush.

Practical points

  • Ask your doctor for advice on altitude and vaccinations before booking.
  • Choose a plan with generous acclimatisation days and a gentle daily gain.
  • Bring snacks the child enjoys and keep them well hydrated.
  • Pack extra warm layers, hats, mittens and a child-sized sleeping bag or liner.
  • Keep the daypack light and let a porter carry the rest.

Fees

Children below ten are exempt from the national park entry fee, according to the figures supplied to us. Check current rules before booking.

Be ready to turn back

The goal is a good experience, not reaching a particular point. If a child is unwell, descending early is the right decision, and a shorter trek such as the Everest View route can be a good alternative.

Tell us the ages and we will suggest a suitable plan.

Understanding altitude and children

Children can get altitude illness just like adults, but they may not recognise or describe symptoms. Watch for unusual crying, loss of appetite, tiredness, vomiting or refusal to play, and treat these seriously. Because children can deteriorate quickly, descend at once if you are concerned. Many family treks are therefore designed with a lower maximum altitude and slower progress, so that the experience is fun rather than a test of endurance.

Keeping the trek fun

Children enjoy small goals and games, such as counting prayer flags, spotting yaks or collecting stones for a cairn, and they love meeting other children in the villages. Plan shorter walking days with long breaks and let them set the pace. Bring snacks, a favourite book and a few small toys for the lodge evenings. Praise effort and avoid making the summit the only measure of success.

Health and comfort

Carry a well-stocked first-aid kit, including child-friendly medication prescribed by your doctor, and check that vaccinations are up to date. Dress children in layers, with warm hats and gloves, and keep feet dry. Make sure they drink enough, as dehydration comes quickly. Keep a close eye on sunburn and cold, since young skin is more sensitive.

Questions to discuss with your doctor and operator

  • Is my child's age and health suitable for the altitude we are planning?
  • What is the plan if my child feels unwell, and how quickly can we descend?
  • Are there other children in the group, and is the guide experienced with families?
  • Does the insurance policy cover children at altitude?
