The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla takes about 30 to 40 minutes, but the whole travel day is longer: an early start, a wait at the terminal and, in busy months, a road transfer to Ramechhap first. Fares are set by the airlines and change, so check the current figure with your operator before you budget.
How long the flight takes
The air time from Kathmandu to Lukla is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. From Ramechhap (Manthali) it is shorter, around 20 minutes. Allow far more than the air time: you arrive at the terminal early, check in, and wait for the weather on the Lukla side to clear before your aircraft is released.
Kathmandu or Ramechhap
In busy months a share of Lukla flights have operated from Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu to ease congestion at the capital airport. The road from Kathmandu to Ramechhap takes several hours (commonly four to five), so groups often leave in the middle of the night. The arrangement has changed between seasons, so ask which airport applies to your date. See the Ramechhap flight diversion guide and the midnight drive questions.
Typical schedule
Lukla flights run in the morning because cloud builds in the valley later in the day. Expect an early hotel pick-up, with departures spread across the morning. If the weather closes in, the flights are held or cancelled and passengers are rebooked, sometimes for the next day. Flights back from Lukla follow the same pattern, which is why a spare day matters. See what to do when Lukla flights are delayed.
What the ticket costs
Fares are set by the airlines, differ for foreigners and residents, and change from season to season, so we do not quote a fixed figure here. On our guided package the Lukla flights both ways are included in the price. If you buy tickets yourself, compare current fares and confirm the baggage allowance before paying. For package prices see the rupee price and the dollar price.
Baggage limits
Small aircraft have strict weight limits, usually modest and enforced, with a separate allowance for hand baggage. Ask for the current figure before you pack. Carry a duffel for the trail and leave non-essential items at your Kathmandu hotel. Keep medication, valuables and warm layers in your daypack, because checked bags can travel on a later aircraft.
Plan the days around the flight
Never book an international departure for the day after your planned return from Lukla. Keep at least one spare day, and read how many buffer days to add and who pays when flights are delayed. For the flight itself, see flying to Lukla.
