Everest View trek itinerary, day by day

3 min read

The Everest View trek is a short Khumbu walk that gives views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku without going high enough to demand the full acclimatisation of the Everest Base Camp route. The highest point is around 3,900 m, at the Everest View Hotel above Namche, at Khumjung and Tengboche. That makes it a popular choice for families, first-time trekkers and anyone with only a week. A typical plan runs about seven days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, including the flights. The outline below is a common shape, but operators vary it, so use it to compare quotes.

Day 1: Kathmandu to Lukla and Phakding

You fly from Kathmandu to Lukla at about 2,860 m, a short and scenic mountain flight, then walk a gentle stage down the Dudh Koshi valley to Phakding at about 2,610 m. It is an easy first day of two to four hours, with prayer wheels, mani walls and suspension bridges. The early flight is weather-dependent, so keep your schedule flexible.

Day 2: Phakding to Namche Bazaar

The trail follows the river, crosses several high suspension bridges, enters the Sagarmatha National Park near Monjo and then climbs steeply to Namche Bazaar at about 3,440 m. The final climb is the hardest part of the trek and takes about an hour or more. If the weather is clear you may see Everest from a viewpoint on the way up.

Day 3: Namche to Khumjung and the Everest View Hotel

This is the main acclimatisation day. You climb from Namche to the Everest View Hotel at about 3,880 m, a hillside viewpoint with a wide panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. You continue to Khumjung village at about 3,780 m, with its school, monastery and stone houses, and may visit nearby Khunde. You return to Namche or sleep in Khumjung, depending on the plan.

Day 4: to Tengboche

The trail contours above the Dudh Koshi valley, descends through forest to Phunki Tenga and climbs to Tengboche at about 3,870 m. The monastery, with Ama Dablam rising behind it, is the best-known stop on the route. In the afternoon you can join the evening prayers if the monks are in session and ask your guide about etiquette.

Day 5: Tengboche to Namche Bazaar

You walk back down through forest to the river, cross the bridge and climb to Namche. The return is faster than the way up and gives you a second look at the villages and the views. Use the evening for souvenir shopping, a bakery stop and a rest.

Days 6 and 7: Namche to Lukla and Kathmandu

A long downhill day takes you to Lukla, where you celebrate with the team. The next morning you fly back to Kathmandu. Keep a spare day after the trek for flight delays, and do not schedule a tight international connection.

What to check in any Everest View itinerary

  • At least one rest day in Namche before the high viewpoints.
  • A spare day for flight delays at Lukla.
  • Which nights are spent where, and at what height.
  • Whether a helicopter return is available and what it costs.
