The Everest View trek is a teahouse trek, so you sleep in simple lodges and eat in shared dining rooms. Because the route stays below about 3,900 m, comfort is better than on higher treks, with more reliable electricity, hot water and food choices. It is still a mountain environment, and nights can be cold.
Rooms and beds
Rooms are small and normally have two single beds with mattresses and pillows. They are unheated, so bring a warm sleeping bag or ask whether blankets are provided. Many lodges have attached or shared bathrooms. Namche and Khumjung have the most comfortable options, and there are a few upscale hotels, including the Everest View Hotel.
The dining room
The dining room is the warm place. A stove is lit in the evening, and everyone gathers there. Arrive early to get a good seat, and bring a warm layer for the walk back to your room.
Food and drink
- Dal bhat, the rice and lentil meal, with refills.
- Noodle soup, fried rice, pasta, potatoes, eggs and pancakes.
- Bakeries in Namche and Tengboche for cakes, coffee and pastries.
- Hot drinks, such as ginger tea and lemon tea.
Choose freshly cooked vegetarian meals where possible, since meat is carried a long way and may be less fresh.
Water
Use boiled, filtered or treated water rather than bottled water, which is expensive and creates plastic waste. Many lodges sell boiled water by the litre.
Showers, charging and wifi
Hot showers, charging and wifi are available at many lodges for an extra fee. Wifi is patchy, so tell family not to expect constant contact. A power bank is useful, and cold weather drains batteries quickly.
Keeping healthy
Wash hands before meals, use sanitiser and choose hot, freshly cooked food. Bring rehydration salts and basic medicines in case of stomach upset.
