The Everest View trek and the Everest Base Camp trek begin in the same place, Lukla, and share the early trail to Namche Bazaar. After that the two routes diverge. The Everest View trek turns to the Khumjung and Tengboche area and finishes in about a week. The Base Camp trek continues up the valley to nearly 5,400 m and takes about two weeks. Choosing between them is mostly about time, fitness and expectations.
Length and effort
The Everest View trek takes about 6 to 9 days, with a maximum height of around 3,900 m and walking days of three to six hours. Everest Base Camp takes about 12 to 14 days, with a high point of about 5,364 m at base camp and 5,545 m at Kala Patthar, and many long days above 4,000 m.
Views
Both give views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. The Everest View trek gives a wide panorama from a viewpoint above Namche and Tengboche, while the Base Camp trek takes you to the foot of the Khumbu glacier and closer to the mountain. Base Camp itself has no summit view of Everest, and many trekkers feel the best view comes from Kala Patthar.
Cost and time
The shorter trek costs less in lodging, guide and porter days, though the Lukla flights make up a large part of both budgets. If you have a week or less, the Everest View trek is the practical choice.
Risk and altitude
The lower maximum height makes the Everest View trek safer for beginners, older travellers and families. The Base Camp trek has a higher risk of altitude illness and needs more careful acclimatisation.
Quick guide
- Choose Everest View for a week, a gentler pace and a comfortable first Himalayan trek.
- Choose Everest Base Camp if you have around two weeks, good fitness and want to reach the base of the mountain.
- Start with Everest View and return for the Base Camp trek later if you enjoy the mountains.
