The day above Namche is the highlight of the Everest View trek. It combines a famous panorama with two traditional Sherpa villages, Khumjung and Khunde, and gives the best chance to see Everest from a comfortable altitude. It is also an excellent acclimatisation walk.
The Everest View Hotel viewpoint
The hotel sits at about 3,880 m on a ridge above Namche. From its terrace you can see Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku in one sweep. The view is best in the early morning before cloud builds, and a cup of tea on the terrace is a classic stop. You do not need to stay there to visit.
Khumjung village
Khumjung is a large Sherpa village at about 3,780 m with stone houses, walled potato fields and a hospitable atmosphere. Its school, founded with the support of Sir Edmund Hillary's work in the region, and its monastery are popular visits.
Khunde and the hospital
The neighbouring village of Khunde has a hospital that serves local communities and trekkers. It is a short walk away, and the walk between the villages shows daily life, with children, yaks and wood stores.
Getting there
The path from Namche climbs about 400 to 500 m, a steady climb of around two to three hours. Walk slowly and carry water. You can return by the same route or a different trail via Khumjung and a lower path to Namche.
Tips
- Go early for the clearest views.
- Carry warm layers, since wind can be cold.
- Take cash for tea and small donations.
- Ask permission before photographing people and inside the monastery.
